different strokes for different folks , all depends on what YOU like

personally, I would go with a 260 Rem and not look back ... the 6.5mm is rediculously accurate

these guys are shooting pistols chambered in 260 at 1000 yards

I've shot both. Killed many with the Savage 7mm-.08 its my favorite.

.308 is a great gun though and wider variety. It's hard to find ammo for the 7.

well, my opinion somewhat differs from the previous posts... I think both calibers are capable and both should perform well as long as the following variables are taken into consideration.

first , you must look at the rifle twist / bullet combo you will use. the twist on the barrel has great effect on the type and weight bullets you can use...

The second thing to look at is getting a scope / scope base combo that will give you the amount of adjustments to cover the distance for which ever projectile you use .
my rule of thumb on this is enough adjustment to compensate for distance as far as the bullet remains supersonic with the particular load.

for example . I have a 308 that shot extremely well to 800 yards , but my scope ran out of adjustment around 920 yards... when I tried to shoot steel at 1000 , it was quite a challenge . keep in mind the bullet drops another 91 inches from 920 to 1000, pretty hard to eyeball at 1000 yards..... I since swapped out the scope for one with much more travel.... it makes all the difference in the world to be able to properly dial in.

so if you plan on shooting long range , pick your bullet , pick your twist , pick the right optic /base combo ... many calibers will do the jobs if these first 3 variables are matched... if there not , your gun may not perform as well regardless of caliber..

            my 2c.
