That bites but I am sure he'll be back, doesn't seem like he was too startled. Hopefully you he'll show up next year if you get the chance to hunt there again.
I had a great encounter with a huge buck I've been watching for three years this last Saturday. 12 yards. It was cold and I wore an extra jacket that made a slight, and I mean slight, noise as I tried to draw. He never looked at me but heard me try to draw about 4 times. Finally he stepped off into the brush as I came to full draw. He walked away and left me shaking like a leaf in my quad pod. Reminded me of why I do this stuff. It was great!
Sorry you wont get another shot at that deer Shane.
Hey Shane....dang I feel your pain. Thanks for sharing. Last year I shot 2 does from my stand in a matter of an hour. Kept dragging them off to the bushes and kept getting back up in the stand as there was still plenty of daylight left. Well....15 min later this really nice 10 point comes walking right in and Im going Holy cow....Im gonna get 3 deer in one evening....well....the buck was less than 15 yards broadside to my left...I slowly turn in my stand and my arrow brushes up against a small little branch and pulls my arrow out and it drops to the ground. The buck kinda turns at looks on the ground for a second and continues feeding. And Mr. Eienstien(ME) only had 3 arrows that day ...so here I am up in my stand with no arrows watching this nice buck right below me. It was a real teaching experience for me but pretty much qualifies for a BLEW IT day.... Hope you get a second chance at your buck!!
Hate to hear that Shane but I tell you what, that was a good stroy and I felt like I was in the tree right there with you seeing all of this play out. Maybe becasue I have had a similar experience. I hope you get on a big one that is even better somehow. Just when you think it won't or can't happen BAMMMM it happens.
That was a great "read"! I was drawn in from the first sentence.
Honestly....well done.
OH - and as for missing the deer - I'm sorry for your disappointment. BUT as a song writer, I've found that most of my inspiration has come from one failure or another, and your failure to take a deer provided you with a good story to share, so in my opinion it wasn't a wasted moment.
