    laptop recommendations?

I'm thinking of getting my wife a new laptop for Christmas. I would like to hear some recommendations on what type of processor would be best. In the past i've always like the Intel processors better than the AMD's. Is this still the generally consensus?

all new pc come with vista and the amd cant handle it as well--go with an intel dual core
also-if you plan to keep vista make sure you get 2gigs of ram at least
i prefer to switch back to xp
    dont buy a dell
hp, toshiba or sony will be your best bet

      I agree with wes.

I have had a Sony for my last 3 laptops and I love them. I use mine everyday and mine goes into the field with me.

HP has served us well for laptops.

I'm looking at a Toshiba right now. But it has the AMD processor and i'm not real keen on the idea of the AMD. I have always liked the Intel's better.

If my laptop broke today, I would go out and buy a Macbook Pro in a heart beat. I just can't justify the $$$$ with this one working.

I have to agree Vista Sucks, I've never had much luck with a Dell. I currently own a HP and a Toshiba. My sister has a Sony and so far no problems with them.

I always go for Intel and lots of memory and if possible no shared video memory.

i also agree with a mac- a little tricky to learn at first but once you youll love it-also no virus and never any problems-but can get a bit pricey

I just work on them everyday and see what is what when they always say "wow this is cheaper than the IBMs! Get a loaner from them and run it through its paces and see how it performs!"

If you can afford an IBM/Lenovo, i have worked on them the last 7 years and before that was the Compaq. HP laptops are alright, toshibas are pricey to get work on and are pretty proprietary in hardware, but pretty darn good. The home line of dell and HP suck (inspiron and pavillion), Sony and Lenovo are about as good as it gets. Lenovos use titanium lids on their thinkpads and try to stay away from AMD in whatever you get.

As for the OS, pay the extra few bucks and get XP home/pro with it. Vista still has software incompatibility issues and if you have 2000 software still, XP is compatible with it.

Get a Mac..... you will never go back to a pc. and if you have to have windows it will run that also. They just don't have all the problems that the pc has.

I could not agree more. Ever since I got my MacBook Pro, I haven't had any of the BS problems that a PC gives you.

not to hijack......most of the macs i've seen have 1gig of ram. Is this enough? Most pc systems now have 2 gig ram. I'm looking to replace an old dell desktop with an imac. Good decision?
