    Shell holder problem

Bought a Hornady shell holder for 220 Swift rounds I was loading for a rifle Shilen is building for me. I bought 300 rounds of Winchester brass on sale from Midway and was in the process of full length resizing the new cases. 158 rounds out of 300 would not seat into the shell holder completely or not at all. I called Midway and they said they would replace the "bad" brass and make it right. They also sugested that I should first contact Winchester and give them a chance to correct the problem and if I was not satisfied they would replace them.

I contacted Winchester and told them about the problem. They said to return the "bad" brass to them and they would investigate the problem, they sent UPS out to pick them up. Got a call from Winchester today and they said that the "bad" brass met all SAAMI specs and that some shell holders are on the lower end of the spec. They offered to replace the 220 Swift brass but they were not in stock at this time and the next production run would be late in 2012. They offered me any other brass they had in stock as a replacement.

Winchester is sending me 200 rounds of 264 Winchester Magnum brass to replace the "bad" 220 Swift brass.

I have always used RCBS products and have yet to have any problems, I am not slamming Hornady but offering information. If you have the same problems as I did think of changing shell holders first.

It is refreshing to know there are companies out there that are willing to go out of their way to take care of the customer.

My hat is off to Winchester and to Midway for their customer service and what they do for our sport!

Never had a problem with my Lee shell holders in any caliber. Sorry to hear the Hornady didn't work out for ya. I only use their bullets. Haven't tried any of their equipment.

I'm not understanding what you mean the brass would not seat in the shell holder. The brass did not fit into the shell holder ????

Most shell holders are made to fit a variety of rounds, not just one. As a result, some rounds fit very loosely, while others are almost snug. Unfortunately it sojnds like the shell holder you have may be a couple thousandths tight. A file or emery cloth should fix it.

Why are you resizing new brass? That's a waste of time.

Winchester has the brass so I can not send a picture, the extractor groove that is cut into the brass would not fit in the machined slot in the shell holder.

I always full length size and trim all new brass as a starting point to insure that they are all uniform.
After I receive the rifle from Shilen and find out what loads it likes I will neck size the brass and full length size as needed.

I've never resized new brass. But I usually use Lapua brass on everything and have never had to.

I've never bought hornady shell holders, always used RCBS, but I use a Forster co-ax press so I don't need shell holders any more any way.
