Looks like I'm gonna be hunting with my shotgun and wanted to know what would be my best choice of slug and which choke to use with it.

Best slug for smooth bore?

Hatchie, I've been slug-n since the late 1970's when I was in Ohio then (due to my x-wife). I has been my experiance that Remmington Sluggers are hard to beat in "almost" any smooth bore. I know others will disagree, but that is my experiance. They are fairly cheap on the wallet($2.50-3.50 a box), and fairly consitant to 50 yards. I've got two set up for slug-n now and am con-tin-plate-n a third. One will hold groups around 7-8" at 135 yards with the 4x and rifled barrel. The other is a smoth bore Rem Ladies and Youth Mod 20 with Mod choke, 21" barrel, and Williams clamp on open sights attached to the rail. It holds 3" groups at fifty with Sluggers.
I would buy several boxes and try a box through each choke tube at the range. Just besure to wear some shoulder protection so you dont start to develope a flintch, at the range, where multiple shots will be fired from a bench. Remember, a lot of speed isn't needed when shooting somthing that weighs nearly 440 grains in 12 ga (or also known as 69-72 caliber)
BTW, good meet-n ya and that Night Stalker dude! (Shhhhhh) Maybe we can do lunch sometime.

Choke should be modified..not full.
I'm thinking of taking the boy shot gunning
I belong to a gun club if you and TG want to shoot some slugs at paper. Range goes out to 1000 yards for long guns and pistol/shotgun distances. Would be fun to shoot some powder fer a change....

I use Winchester 2 3/4 cheapies. I have a rem. 870 and a smoothbore barrel on mine. I have killed deer with one shot at 80+or-5 yards a number or times. We have weird firearm regs. here in Indiana, but I have never felt like I was burden by using a 12ga. or even a 20ga. You never have a doubt when you hit a deer with 1oz. of lead or even 7/8 oz. of lead. I cannot afford to shoot the sabot slugs and have been using foster slugs for years. The winchester's usually run for about $2.75-$3.25 at walmart.
I usually have my gun hit dead on at 75 and if ever I would take a shot at a deer at 125 I would just slip it up towards the spine.
Another outstanding slug for smoothbores are the Federal trueballs. We have hit targets 175 yards out with them. These are by far the most accurate foster slug on the market. At Walmart they around $3.50-$3.90 a box. If you are worried about group size I would go with the federal trueball, but worried about price, I would not hesitate to go with the winchester's. O-wait, I didn't.
I do not know why I do not hear that more folks do not use them on your guys hogs! They are devistating. In my exp. the 2 3/4 are not that bad, besides what other folks may say about them. Now the 3 inch mags, now that is a different story, they do kick, and I do not know if you have enough advantage using them and still take the abuse. Shot deer with both 2 3/4 and 3 inch, I just assume you 2 3/4.
We used to have bowling matches with them too! This is a awsome way to get rid of you fall supply of ammo!
Email me if you have any questions or want to talk about slugs and hunting.

I have had great accuracy with Winchester 1oz. 2 3/4" rifled slugs at 1600fps out of a smooth bore with improved cyl. choke tube. They kick like a mule but are very accurate out of my Benelli to 100yds. with the 18" barrel and rifle sights. Did I say they kick like a mule?! Another accurate slug is the Fiochi reduced recoil slug. 1200fps. Much easier on the shoulder.
