    Lost a buck !!

Lost a big bodied buck this morning! He jumped out while I was stalking and I noticed he was either hit by a truck or shot yesterday because he was acting like a leg was broke. So I took a risky 40 yard shot lengthwise and had a solid hit. Then walking another 50 yards I saw him and shot him in the neck and I thought he hit the ground but when I walked up to where he was he is nowhere to be found I walked around for 3 hours trying to find him and to no luck.

Hopefully I will have some extra help from above to recover this buck in the next few hours. I found no blood but it is muddy and misty out but I know I hit him both times because the first shot there was a solid hit and he really started crawling and getting up and trying to move, and the second hit I watched the water blow off his neck through the scope.

    Good luck on your search.

If it's muddy and there is no rain falling currently, you ought to be able to track him.

Good luck to you, I hope you find him soon.

Should've used the ol' .800 Nitro Express. That would've showed 'im.

Grayson - My friend was getting on me saying I should have used my .458

Unfortunately I was excited to try my newly acquired .243 so I guess from now on it will be my .30-06, .280, or .338

Little confused, was this bow or rifle? The 40 yd comment in the initial post made me think bow.

.243 is plenty of rifle. Used and killed with one most of my life until 2000 when I added a .25-06.

Didn't find him last night Checked the local water holes for the classic " gutshot " deer scenario to no such luck. Went out at 3:15pm and got home around 6:30pm

Bill - it was with the .243

Wes122984 - I love the caliber! I am not going to let this sour my love for it because I had 2 shot opportunities that were less then favorable. I bought the gun 2 weeks ago to use for my coyote gun, and that it shall be

                    243

I've shot several deer with a 243 that ran a good ways before dropping with little blood trail 'till the end. Of course, I'm primarily a bowhunter and often wondered if I had subconciously moved the cross hair to behind the shoulder without realizing it or if I was just off. Where is the lease? I know it's snowing here in Midland/Odessa so I hope it's warmer at your spot. That'd make it hard to find. Good luck.

Well, I'd offer to help you look, but I just went hunting Friday and I'm sure the wife would kill me. How far away is your place? Might be able to swing it if it's close.
