Which scope mount goes in front???

Trying to help a buddy out putting a scope on his new Win Model 70 300 win mag. Anyway, the bases/rings I bought (for mod 70's) are two different heights. One maybe 1/8" taller than the other. Does the taller one go on the back toward the butt?
    Thanks!

I would say the taller to the front should be 20 moa difference

Wouldn't you want the 20MOA to slope DOWN in the front? For longer range shooting? Seems like the 20MOA bases I've seen for Rem 700's (one piece though) were taller in the rear. I would guess the taller base would go in the back. I'm not that familiar with Win Mod 70's, but my 700 and a Ruger I once had were lower at the back of the reciever, which required a taller base at the rear. My 700 is totally round on the front, but flattened out on the rear, the Ruger was a Ranch rifle with the bases machined into the reciever, but the rear base was considerably lower, neccessitating special "Ruger" rings.

It looks slightly lower on the back but not enough to say for sure. Guess I'll have to try it and see if it'll board sight...

Does it not say in the instructions which one goes where? Or is it not stamped front/rear?

According to Talley's website, taller goes on the rear.

They will usually only bolt up one way..

If it's for a certain amount of MOA offset, the taller of the two would go to the rear.

The holes line up both ways. There is no instructions with the package. Guess I'll just go taller in the back. See if it'll bore site...

Don't forget clear fingernail polish on the screws to keep them from loosening up.

From experience last weekend, the taller mount goes in the front. I mounted the taller one in the rear and could not figure out why the bullet was stricking the grouind 5 feet in front of me when I was aiming @ 100yrds.

Hmm. Well I put it the higher one on the back. Going to go bore sight it and shoot it tomorrow. Hope I got it right...
