    Interpreting/reading deer tracks!!

    How can u tell by looking at deer tracks if it's a buck or a doe?

    Thanks..pics would help.

    I don't think you can tell beyond a guess based on size and body wieght relative to the body size in your area.

      size and placement.

      Bucks have broad shoulders, so the back leg steps inside the front. The opposite is true of does. And mature bucks have bigger hooves than does, and weigh more, so they are a little deeper on average.

        Also look for dew claws. Two indentions behind the hoofprints. Not always visible though. Width and length is what to look for.

        A good book on the subject is " The Art and Science of Tracking" by Tom Brown.
        Its a heavy read, but its good stuff.

          ok good, so the dew claws are only found on big bucks right?? ill check out the book u recommended above..

            dew claws can be seen on any deer in softer ground. it is not always a sing that you are looking at buck tracks.

            the placement will tell you a lot more than the dew claws. and i have never even seen a picture of a buck with his dew claws touching the ground.

                You can tell by there poop, if you hold it in your mouth for a few seconds! Try it and see!

                  I also go by the placement of tracks. In an area with heavy foot traffic this is hard to do but in that case you can compare sizer and depth and use common sense.
