I play baseball at the University of Arkansas but im from Freer, Tx. Moving up here was a change of scenery to say the least. I went from hunting in cat claw and cactus to hunting in trees and vines. I thought my bow season was going to be a bust because they said the deer didnt get very big up here, small horns and big bodies was all i heard about.
Three weeks before the season started i bought a couple of cheap tree stands and a pretty cool pop up blind. I figured that setting up on a trail was my only hope. I brushed my pop up blind in pretty well and i was really satisfied with the location. A buddy of mine and i started feeding it pretty heavily and got a few does and lots of coons on my trail cam. But never any bucks.
Well i was hunting this afternoon and it was getting late, i hadnt even seen a squirrel. i decided to get out of the blind and walk home. As soon as i started to reach for the zipper i saw him walking the trail. He was walking from my left to right quartering away from me at 17 yards. As soon as i saw him i drew my bow and he stopped perfectly. As i released the arrow it felt like slow motion. He hunched up as the arrow hit him and took off. I felt good with the shot but it was a little dark so i left him alone for an hour and got on the trail.
At first the blood looked really good and seemed promising. then as the story goes it started to thin out and practically quit. I decided to wait till morning and went to the house. I called my gf and she kinda rattled my cage about leaving him in the woods and made me feel bad for quitting. I returned to the woods and crawled on may hands and knees following blood no bigger than a pencil lead at times. he crossed the trail again and started going uphill. The blood got a whole lot thicker and easier to follow. I crawled to within 3 feet of him before i looked up and saw him laying there. he scared the crap out of me to be honest.
Sorry about the long read im excited. Thank you to my gf for making me go back out and not quitting for the night.
