    Serious question for LEO

I bought a pistol from a friend not too long ago and I keep it in my truck (concealed) I do not have a chl. Well today I had to go to ft hood so I went to take it out. It is not there which means someone stole it between Monday night and today. I do not know the serial number or anything what process do I need to go through? Call the police station and file a report? Do I need to see if I can get with the original owner and get the numbers?

I'm not LEO, but I keep a written log of every firearm I own, with the manufacturer, model, and serial number. That way if I ever have a firearm stolen I can report it to both the police and also to my insurance company.

If it were me, I'd certainly try to track down the serial number through the original owner. If the original owner remembers where he bought it, he could probably trace the serial number from the store's records. That way you'd stand a better chance of getting it back if it ever got recovered or if someone tried to pawn it.

I know stupid mistake by me. What's weird is nothing else in my truck was touched. Not my tools in my back seat my wallet which was in my center console just the pistol.

That sucks, I'd do what MojoTexas suggested. Good luck and hope you get it back.

This happened to a guyI know, turned out his wife had removed to pistol without his knowledge. Check very seriously with anyone who had access to your vehicle before you call the police.

Lesson for all of us: add that new firearm to your log immediately. If you don't have a list of your guns, make one. I have a form I got from the NRA, and I don't keep it with my guns.

This is from a Temple Cop. You can file a report with the police, without serial numbers, your case will be inactive as soon as it goes to the detectives. Try your best to get the serial no. however you can. Also, try and think about anytime that you can think of that your vehicle was left unsecured, and something seemed amiss when you returned to it.

If you can get the serial numbers from the previous owner, I would file a report just like previously stated, it turns up in a pawn shop OR a crime scene............

                      Yes.

If you can get the serial number then it will go into the national computer system, NCIC. Most times that officers find firearms they run them for stolen. It takes about 5 seconds to find out if a gun (or any item with a serial number) is stolen assuming the person has the serial numbers.

I recovered a pistol one time that was stolen several years ago from Detroit, MI.

.... and if the original owner does not have the numbers, if you can find out where he bought it, it is kept at the point of the original sale from an FFL.

A temple cop just came by the house and he pretty much said the same thing. He said without a serial number there is really no chance to get it back unless it is found within the next couple of days. But I should be able to get the number tomorrow. I am very good at locking my truck as soon as I get out and the only thing I can think of is that I went to get groceries with my girlfriend and son yesterday and when I got home she gave him food and I got the groceries out. I maybe left it unlocked then which really upsets me.
