    Buckshot Range

I am going to be managing a herd of wild hogs... I am restricted to using a shotgun and I was wondering what the maximum effective range of 00 buckshot is from a 12 gauge?

    Inside 30 yards for sure!
    Slug would be better!

    Good luck.

What barrel length? Choke or no choke? 2.75 inch shells or 3 inch shells?

40 yard may stretch it... 30 for sure.. and I agree.. slugs are allot better and have a longer range depending on the type of barrel you have...

Us old east Texas dog guys can tell ya for sure. 3in won't shoot any futher than 2 3/4in. With a 28 in barrel with full choke using #1 buck it will consistantly put 4/5 pellets in a 16 inch circle at 100 steps

I'd go with rifled slugs but if you have to shoot buckshot keep it under 30 yds. I've had bad luck with buckshot on hogs though...

I'd recommend 000 buck in a 3", 12 ga. shell. Lethal to thirty yards.

Full choke.....out to 70 easy.........we roll hogs all the time with buckshot.....like busting a covey of quail.

You do get more pellets with a 3 inch load though. Not more powder.

Just my .02, but I'd go #1's. 30 years ago, at the age of 15, I killed my first Pineywoods buck at 97 steps shooting 3" mag. #1's.

My set up for coyotes will put all pellets in an 18" circle at 40yds. It will put half of them in same circle at 60yds. I shoot an x-full extended choke tube and 3" #4 buckshot. That's 41 .24 cal. pellets. I would feel comfortable on a pig at 50yds. I can put 20 + pellets in head/neck/chest at that range. It will either go down or not far.

I like #1 and #4's even better. Really need to shoot a few different rounds to see how your gun shoots. Also try to stay away from copper coated. I am comfortable will my model 120 full choke put to 55-60yds but have a rem 1100 that I will not shoot past 40.

Also as mentioned 3inch carry more lead but less energy

I have 870 Super Mag which shoots 3.5". a box of (6) 3.5" 00 Buck run 9.99 at Academy, works great out to 70yds. I'm also using a pattermaster choke which equates to a superfull. Two weeks ago I unloaded on a group of 20 hogs and once all the squealing stopped there were 4 laying dead, this was in the backyard at my parents.
