    Iphone 4 software help

I was downloading the new OS5 last night, and something happened during the download. Now itunes is telling me I need to restore my phone, but when I do that it's giving me an error 1611. I am freaking out right now because I dont want to lose all my songs, apps and pictures. I was going to call Apple support, but I dont have my serial number because the only thing my phone will do is say "Connect to iTunes"

    HELP!

i had a nightmare with mine too. Lost all the apps. Couldnt find the back up. Had to use one that was a couple of weeks old. And didnt have all my stuff on it. You should be able to go into settings->general->about and find your serial number

That's why I'm afraid to update my 3GS, I don't think I've talked to anyone who didn't lose something in the update.

I did my 3GS this weekend. When you unplug the phone it will tell you it has been restored. (i freaked a little but didnt panic) then you have to log in with apple id (from phone) then I just followed the steps. Now, when it got to the iCloud part I DID NOT turn it on. I think this may be where people are getting their stuff messed up. If you click ok to enable it it will ask you if you want to merge your devices. If you click merge and you have more than one device on that account, i.e. another phone (wifes or kids iphone), iPod, iPad, it is going to put all the apps, songs, photos, contacts everything on all the devices or remove some. My neighbor merged his when he set his new one up and all of stuff on his phone ended up on his wifes phone and iPad as well.

Hope this helps, I believe the mess ups may be coming from activating iCloud.

I had this problem the last time I tried to update my OS.

I tried to download the new OS, but it would go all the way thru and then kick me out saying I lost internet connection. I finally got with my brother in law (who is a computer guru) and he and I trouble shot the problem.

The answer we came up with was, the glitch in the download was my anti-virus. It would not allow the download. I have to turn it off, download and update, then turn it back on.

If you have backed up, then you should not loose much of anything.

put phone in dfu mode, (google it to learn how) then hold down control and click restore, it should pop up and give you a previously used restore point or backup. click restore from backup

This was my solution when I updated my son's Ipod touch yesterday. I had to turn off ZoneAlarm. It kept saying I needed to restore Ipod, then restore would fail. It did this several times, then I remembered I had same problem last time I updated IOS. Turned off ZoneAlarm, retried successfully.

Wes, I googled the 1611 error and most people are saying to remove itunes and then download it again, then try the restore. I trust you as the resident iphone guru, but just wanted to run this by you first.

i quit with all apple products a year or two ago and went with android, but i have gotten that error a number of times, i would try the solution i gave you first as it works 99% of the time.

i dont remember if its shift, or control, but one of the 2 will promptyou for a restore from back up. but make sure the phone is in dfu mode, and listen for the computer to recognize it first from the little beeps, then open itunes and do it. leave itunes closed until you hear the computer recognize it.
