Well, my Saturday started off really good. It was a great morning, and the wind was just right. Had several young deer come in, then had a nice mature doe come in. She worked her way into a shooting lane, and turned broadside. I drew on her and waited for her to quarter away, but she never did. I decided to go ahead and take the shot. The shot seemed good to me. I thought I may have hit an inch further back than I wanted, but still felt good about the shot. I gave her about 30 mins, then started the tracking. Did I mention that this was the first time I have ever shot a 2 blade rage? Well...the track went ok. Not as much blood as I would have liked, but the blood was bright red with no guts, and I was able to follow it fairly easily. I had the feeling that I may have only hit one lung. After about 200 yards of tracking through the woods, she had come out by the lake and ran about 50 yards on the shoreline, then the blood trail went into the water. I was never able to pick up the trail again. I walked the bank of the lake and looked all afternoon saturday, then went back out on Sunday, and was never able to determine where she came out of the water, or if she did. This is the first time I have shot an animal and was not able to recover it. I had a few questions though.
1. Could the deer have attempted to swim the lake, and drown?
2. How long after you shoot a deer, are you able to recover the animal and the meat still be good?
3. If I would have found the deer and it was on corp of engineer property right by the lake, would I be able to legally recover it?
