    Old Well???

I found this some time ago, but was unable to relocate it. Due o the drought it has resurfaced. What do yall think this is, on old well? It is in the bottom of a creek about twenty yards from where a spring comes out. Notice the groove, that was put there intentionally. It also had some type of metal sticking out of the concrete, but has almost all rusted away.

Wouldn't the groove be so that the water drains in that spot?

That would be my guess too. I wonder what it was for?

I'm thinking that spring produced very little warter and had a low creek level. The groove was cut to channel the low water lever in to the cistern

I talked to our landowners 94 yo father today and asked him about this. The land had been on the family since the early 30's. He said sometime in the 1800's there was am old homestead right near there. The spring came up there. The concreted it in to keep the hogs out and the water clear. The groove was to let the excess water run out. This was there primary source of water.

That's cool. We have an old above ground cistern back in the woods on our place, you can see about ten feet down and it has "35" carved in the side.

pretty interesting, I located a well bricked in a circle in the middle of the woods one time were there is absolutly nothing for miles but woods and more woods. I have always wondered and never forgot it. Cool that you got a story with yours
