Carbondale is north of Aspen, I lived there a couple years ago in a 3 bedroom apartment for 600 a month? Carbondale is very reasonable. Glennwood springs is right down the road.

I like Lake City or Ouray.

VCC - that sounds like a good option. Something within a 30 minute drive to skiing, hunting, not a huge tourist town, big enough to have a few restaurants, grocery store, and job opportunities.

I have heard good things about Crested Butte as far as a good small town and ski area. Will have to check into that.

Thanks everyone for all the replies so far. If you can include any info on cost of living, tourist traffic, or any other insider info I would appreciate that as well.

Check out Carbondale, White river national forest is right there Salida isn't too far away, great place. I've got some buddies up there who hunt and work on the mountain I could get you in touch with if you end up doing it. Good luck

Gunnison would be my choice. Some of those other have to many dang tourist. Living in a tourist hotspot really gets on ones nerves.

Don't know about job opps (at any of those places) but Silverton, CO impressed me. Heck, I'd settle for Durango or Pagosa Springs. Haven't been to Lake City or Creede since I can remember, but based on their locations, seems like they might be worth looking into as well.

Pitkin, Colorado is 30 minutes from Gunnison and 1 hour from Crested Butte. It is on the north end of Quartz Valley surrounded by National Forrest and BLM land. Small town for sure, population runs around 70 in the winter.
Check out their site. Scroll down for pics.

Have you considered a little further north? I would look into Montana, Idaho and Wyoming. Island Park, Idaho, Bozeman, Montana area and Dubois and Cody, Wyoming are where I would start looking.
