Snakes are out!

Walking to the stand this morning I came across two rattlers. If you see them you'll know they were the ones I saw because they smell of urine......and I may be soggy.

Can anyone explain to me why, when I run over a snake in my truck and am positive that I hit it, the thing doesn't even seem phased and slithers off?! I ran over a 15-18 inch copperhead last night, only to slam on the brakes and back up and he was no where in sight. How can they survive being run over by a truck?!
