Anyone ever wrap a cage with barbed wire to keep them from holding onto it?

Go to academy and measure their 30 gallon moultrie feeder barrels

On my homeade guards I bout the welded wire mesh from Lowes $12 a role. Wrapped it around lower half of barrel and secured it with self tapping screws and large fender washers. works like a champ.

The lid of a 55 gallon barrel attached to bottom of a 30 gallon is way to go to avoid coons sticking arms in to reach spinner plate - or use the 1" square welded wire mesh. Restricts how far corn is flown but better than having the coons empty the thing out.

                Soo...
I built a cage, and yep, it just gave them something to hang on to while spinning the plate.
I put on an eliminator spinner plate about a month ago, stopped the problem all together.
In fact, this changed the whole feeding pattern around my feeder, no more free meals all night long. It was like a buffet line, coons where the servers and hogs and deer where just waiting around for thier turn.

You bought or built the wrong cages evidently....

Do a search on Eliminator plates on tbh.... The reports suggest they are not completely bulletproof with several reports of failures.. I am testing one on feeder right now but I keep seeing reports of the linkages getting hung up and them not closing all the way.

Yep, I've seen some mention of the issues.
I'm watching mine closely, so far no probs. I have saved over $40 in corn over the past month, so I'm ahead of the game.

And yes, my cage was not perfect. I have a new 500# HCR feeder. The base is smaller then a 55 gal feeder. This made it easier for the coons to reach the plate. Then added smaller mesh to try and solve the problem. Corn just fell to the gound after hitting the mesh. And the squirrels could still fit in the cage and serve up to the rest fo the critters.

I have high hopes for the new spinner plate. We will see.

This is 1000 times correct, I took my Eliminator plate off and now just have a 1" wire cage and my problem is solved, my plate would stick way to often and several times it stuck closed and wouldnt allow corn to be thrown. I like simple yet effective methods now
