    Elk hunters question

About how much meat is on a cow elk? Was wondering if I went on a cow hunt how much I would take home. Thanks

    About this much...

Plastic bag is a cape. Other than maybe 10 lbs of sausage, that's all elk meat minus a backstap and a roast!

    Mmmmmmmmm.......backstraps.

Look at the size of the Tenderloins.

    And a hind quarter.

To the OP, I think Shockvalue's elk took up about two of those 150qt (I think) Coleman coolers (that's just quartered). As to actual weight, I'm not sure but it was a two man job to lift those coolers for sure!

I shot a 2year old bull last year. Total weight was 120lbs. This included cutting the feet off the hams, no ribs, no back straps. This was what I took to get processed. Ribs, and backstraps were kept and processed at home.

We didn't weight all the meat but I'd say 120-140 is pretty close.

A cow will weigh from 300 - 500 pounds live weight so 100-175 lbs of meat easy.

My brother shot a big bull last year and we got close to 300 pounds of meat from it. That bull weighed over 700.

The spike I shot last year yielded close to 200 lbs. He weighed about 500.

Shockvalue's chart is pretty accurate I would say. My 2.5-3.5 year old Elk yielded right at 200#s and required 2 70 quart ice chests for the deboned meat.

                    I wouldn't know.

(5th year in a row being skunked.)

They are a lot flipping bigger when you are hauling them out.

Finished product would range 120-150 would be a good guess.
