    Cathedral cielings again!!!

A month ago i was looking to buy a house and i asked all of you wheather cathedral cielings were more costly concerning keeping the house cool during the summer. That question was fully answered by you all.

Well, i bought a house with a cathedral cieling after reading all your answers without any reservations.....I AM HAPPY WITH MY PURCHASE!

BUT!!!!...here is one more question concerning as to which way would be more effecient to keep the livingroom cool, or any of the rooms that have cieling fans.

CIELING FANS!!!!. The house has ciellings fans thru-out, even in the garage. The cieling fans have a switch for them to turn clock wise or counter clock wise.

SO!!, which way?...SUCK UP THE AIR UPWARDS INTO CEILING, OR PULL THE AIR DOWN FROM THE CEILNG??????

    Your help will appreciated again.

Congrats on your home purchase, Gilbert.

Clockwise in "reverse" in winter and "normal" counter-clockwise for summer.

Heat rises and the fan (in reverse) draws the cooler air up toward the ceiling, pushing the warmer air back down.

Clockwise to keep cool, counter clockwise to keep a room warm. Try switching one to the other direction, and see how much hot air it pushes down from the ceiling area!!

well, looks like i got that totally backwards!

          This is what we do.

Check your blade configuration... you want to push air down in summer and pull air up in winter...

In reality you only need to run the ceiling fans if you are in the room to help you feel more comfortable. Ceiling fans use energy unnecessarily when there is no one in the room to feel the difference. If you run the fans it could possibly cause the A/C to run more therefore consuming more energy than if they were off. Ceiling fans are primarily used for creature comfort.

M2-- I look it up after I posted, and saw that I was incorrect!!

I turn my air up during the day when the house is empty, and leaves the fans running to keep air circulating. then in the evenings the air goes down some and it doesn't have to work as hard to cool the house, or run as long.

Oh to answer your question run the fan so it pushes the air down in the summer and pulls the airup in the winter.

NOW!!!!, i did not know this. I thought that you would run the fans all the time....because as told by some of my friends that WILL help the A/C keep the house cool..MMMMM?

Thanks folks..i really do uppreciate your reponses.

OK, push the air down in the summer, and pull up air during the winter.

                    Thanks

doesn't it depend on which way you are looking at it ?

if there is a switch on the fan, pushing it up usually draws air up and down blows air down.

Another factor to consider regarding up-flow or down-flow is the configuration of your room (room shape, ceiling height, fan location in room) and the location of H/AC vents.

Gil, we keep our ceiling fans going the same way all year....In our climate on the coast the winters don't do as much to us as folks farthur North....don't worry about it and turn on the fans when you feel the need to have a breeze on you.....as told by a previous post, when you leave the room turn the fan off as you won't feel the breeze when you are not there....
