TBH musicians, I have a question

Have I lost my mind? I'm scheduled to start taking lessons on the pedal steel guitar next week but I can't even play a regular guitar. It's what I really want to learn to play the most so I'm going to get a few lessons before I actually buy one. I sat down and got familiar with one today and was showed a couple of chords. It doesn't look as hard as I thought it would.

    Wish me luck.

I'm envious Clint. I've always wanted to learn to play a steel guitar. Hang in there even though it may seem tough for a while; you'll get better the more you practice.

Yep, you sure have lol. Just kidding Clint, actually you'll probaby be better off that way. You'll learn how to play the peddle steel and not try and make it be like a reqular guitar. I could use a good steel player

I think it might be better cuz you won't have any preconcieved ideas about theory or bad habits to break. My dad has a few steels that I've been meaning to borrow and mess with but I just love my SG too much. Have fun and get ya twang on.

            Pretty difficult instrument.
            Best wishes with it.

My uncle played steel guitar as well as another guy I know who is now a studio musician in Nashville. They both told me once it is the most difficult string instrument to learn now to play. The guy who is in Nashville now told me that it took him 3 months working at it like a steady job to learn the basics.
If you can learn it I think it is the best sounding instrument out there. Good luck to you, I am sure you can do it.

It's completely different than a 6-string guitar, so not knowing how to play a guitar won't matter. It would help to know some music theory, but all the hand/eye coordination skills will be completely different anyway.

My thoughts are that, at least I can say "I gave it a try" I've always loved hearing a steel in any band/song. I really don't care much for strumming a guitar but love the melody/tabliture. If I keep with the guitar I see my self being more of a lead player versus a rythym player. This is why I really decided to jump in and give the steel an honest try

I just deleted a bunch of suggestions and called a friend up in Kansas who is a well known pedal steel guy.
He said it was the most difficult thing he has done. He said you have to marry the thing or sit it aside.

I'll stick with my 3-string cigar box guitar

If I really like it and want to continue learning I will buy a pedal steel and run our electric bill way up practicing

Pedal Steel guitars are cool and have a sound all their own. A 6-string is a lot more fun and a lot easier to pull out around a camp fire. Good luck and have fun.
