Anybody paint the exterior brick on their house?

My wife has been after me for years to paint the exterior brick of our house. The brick is an old school pink that isn't all that attractive but my argument forever has been that once you paint it the maintenance begins. BUT she's finally won out.

You guys got any suggestions for primer, type of paint (acrylic vs. latex), etc.? Also, should I paint the wood trim first or last? I'm gonna do it with a sprayer so keep that in mind. Thanks.

You CAN NOT spray paint brick on a house. It will not hold and will have to be stripped off and redone. The only way it will last is to use a brush no wider than 3".

Did you spray yours, Leemo? Seen several that were done by spray. Looks like they're holding up all right, but I sure ain't no paint expert.

          Easy to do

Brick is easy to paint. Pressure wash the surface and let it dry. If it is really porous, prime it with latex block filler. If it is not, prime with a good acrylic latex primer. Then paint with a good latex house paint. You can apply it with a sprayer, but you should roll or brush it out after you spray it on to work it into the brick. It should last for years.

Latex paint and primer is best on exterior brick. Epoxies adhere well to most surfaces; but, they tend to chalk alot when applied outside. Most paint companies wouldn't recommend them for this.

My brother & I have been selling Pittsburgh and Benjamin Moore paints from our store in Sherman for 25+ years. Call us at (903)892-3508 if you need any more advice. Thanks.

Prime with a masonry primer and paint with a good latex paint. This can be applied by spray, brush or roller. FYI Sherwin Williams is having a 40% off sale this weekend. I manage a SW store in Houston. Good luck!

just got through painting the brick on our home about a month ago. We love it and we told the painter to use the best stuff available so we would not have to have it repainted every 5 yrs. He said we could realistically expect to need to repaint every 15-20 years (even though the paint and primer says its gaurenteed for 30 yrs)

I would suggest a long nap roller so you can work it into the pores and yes clean it prior to painting it. Talk to your local paint guys not the box stores and see what paint they recommend.

whatever you do, get the COLOR approved before you paint the whole house....

I seem to remember painting one house four times because she didn't like the color.

three half-shade color changes later, she was (marginally) happy.

                            Use a block filler,latex paint, and a long-nap roller (1" or greater).
Not high gloss, because that will look like crap.

Our builder did the wifes offc in eggshell of whatever he called it. It looks good. Its probably an epoxy. Not a paint and not stucco'd over. He said it holds up nice. Looks good so far.
