I wrote letters that introduced myself, included a google map of our property, some basic hunting safety concerns and asked folks to contact me so that we could exchange phone numbers, shake hands, etc. Did not mention anything about the incident or trespassing in general. I left the letters in mailboxes Thursday afternoon. It led to two phone calls from neighbors with adjoining land. Very nice conversations. I still expect a few more phone calls. I did buy and hang another "Private Property - no trespassing" sign on the fence at our gate. Thanks for the input.

Probably just some decent kids that were just riding around. You probably scared the you know what out of them and they probably will not return. They were on the road and not ripping donuts in a garden or something

I agree that you should stay off of other people's property but kids don't have the same mental capacity as adults and I would not threaten a kid or even call the law on them if they were not doing any more than riding. Now if they were tearing stuff up that is a different story

BTW be careful leaving things in mail boxes without postage, the usps can get pissy about that kind of stuff I have heard

Sounds like you took postive action!

I have meet the neighbors on each side One does not czare the other asked that I call and go thru the front gate instead of over the fence.

I have not meet the ones on the back. Their houses are off the road. I need to write them letters also.

When I first bought my place in Marion county, I ignored the kids riding 4 wheelers.
My thanks was a busted out window and stolen walky talkys.

When I was 13-15 I did that all the time on my atv with my friends to be honest. Got the warning shot more than once. wouldn't do it now.

Post a no treaspassing sign where it can be seen when the gate is left open, pray they dont call the law for you recklessly discharging a firearm in there area, you can not shoot as you did no matter what they were doing, dangerous force for kids on a 4wheeler, a judge will throw the book at you if they complain, a simple defense of a lawsuit could cost you $35k easy, next time shut the gate and if somebody comes on your property take a picture and call the law, these incidents can turn into nightmares if they file charges on you, for all you knew they could have been lost, think what they said when they went home, Mommy, a bad man shot at us, we made a wrong turn and got lost and then he chased us, Hullo, sheriffs office, my 2 kids lot lost and accidently turned onto the neighbors place, as they were leaving a man shot a gun in there direction and chased them on the county road with his truck with the gun hanging out, they were in fear of there lives, i was scared too as while they were telling me this story i saw hi drive up and down the road in front of our house, I heard another shot when he went by,,,,,,,, dont think it cant happen, its a he shot, we fled, he chased us deal with some lies added in for angers sake, dont ever shoot at a treaspasser under similar conditions, its against the law no matter what you feel is right,, good luck, get a electric gate opener and a larger no treaspassing sign,

Hind sights 20-20 but next time go to the gate, close it and lock it. Then wait on them.

Set up a trail cam and get the pic of them riding down your trail. Place those in the mailboxes. If I received a pic of my kid trespassing,I would march him over there to apologize. Then the real punishment would begin!

best thing you can do is get a reputation as the nice guy to your immediate neighbors,

and a reputation as the crazy guy that will shoot you on sight to the rest of the county

I bet they don't come back (especially with the gate closed...)
a couple of yard dogs wouldn't hurt.....

They're kids. We were all once kids. I would leave it be, but mention it to the neighbors.
