55gal plastic barrel corn/feed storage vent question

I got a couple of 55gal plastic barrels from Mr Prosser (thanks Mr Prosser (Jaspro's Dad)) to store corn/record rack out at the lease.
Question is should I drill some very small holes for ventilation to keep from mildewing? I mean the smallest drill bit I have... 1/16th
Maybe glue a piece of small screen over hole for bug control?
If y'all think it would work/help/be needed I would drill holes high on the side on an upward angle so water doesn't leak in.

    Needed or over thinking???

I have 3 55 gallon metal drums without any holes and have not had a drop of moisture in it in over a year. And I have these outside in the elements.

I put my 6 barrels from Jaspro inside a barn all full with corn and didnt drill holes

Are you keep corn/feed loose or still in bags?
And thanks, this is the info I'm looking for.

In the 3 metal ones I have bulk corn and in the 6 plastic ones me and my buddy put our 60lb corn bags in it.

Plastic should be fine also, unless the lids leak??

I'm not worried about moisture leaking so much as what moisture in already in the corn/protein causing mildewing. Sounds like I might be over thinking a simple thing. Just didn't want to go out in a couple of months to top of feeders and find everything ruined...

I understand. Well my corn I have is dry to begin with. I have never had a problem. WOuldnt hurt to put something heavy on lids to add weight

there is not enough moisture content in the corn to make it mildew. how do ya think it sits in rail cars, silos, and bulk bins for so long?!?!?!?

fill it and forget it, unless the lids leak.

I bought bulk feed for the kids goats and horse. When it got warmer I opened up one of the barrels and it was moldy. Called the feed mill and they told me it was expected as the heat caused the moisture in the corn to come out and "sweat" in the barrels.

Just my experience and could not tell you if that is what it was or not but I don't store bulk in the summer anymore, only the cooler months. Could have just been the moisture in the feed pellets too I guess

I would assume because that kind of feed has alot more moisture then corn?

Well I was wondering about the Record Rack Golden nuggets (OP) also not just the corn.
So it sounds like it isn't/shouldn't be/can be/ a problem.
                      Clear as mud...

They will sweat. I never tried to fix the problem, I solved it and got metal barrels. The plastic ones are now trash/can cans.

Guess I will keep the corn in bags and save bulk for my metal barrels
