    Youth rifle

Iam lookng into buying my eight year old daughter a rifle. I have been thinking and really don't want a 223. Iwas thinking about a 22-250 or a 243. The brands I have looked at are the Weatherby youth and marlins. What are some recomendations yall have . Thanks

started my boys off with a .223 but quickly didn't like the "kill" power and a young kid isnt going to have the shooting prowless of an adult. (dont slaughter me, I know your kid can drill quarters at a 1000 yards), so I moved my boys to a .243 and really liked it. They now shoot a .270 and they like it even better.

We got a .243 bolt action for me when I was about 8 and had the stock cut to fit just like a youth model but you can save the cut off piece and have it put back on for when she gets older.

I hand load down/managed recoil rounds for my 30-06 and my daughter shoots it just fine. I load a 165gr Ballistic Tip that kicks less than my .223! She loves it and it has plenty of punch to drop 'em where they get hit.

has just a little more kick than a .243, flatter shooting than a .308

This. Buy them an adult caliber and download it. 30-06 downloaded to 30-30 levels should be a piece of cake. That way you're not constantly upgrading rifles every few years. I'm sure there are some rifles that will accept both a youth and full size butt stock, and your daughter can keep hunting with the rifle she shot her first deer with later on when she's grown into the full size stock.

My son shoots an H&R .243. Sweet little gun. Has the bull barrel so there is hardly no kick.

I bought my son a heavy-barrel .243 single-shot Rossi. As a first big bore rifle, it is a perfect choice. The single shot rifles are a great choice for first rifles for many reasons and the heavy barrel removes any hint of kick. He loves shooting it and it is more than enough caliber for any place I typically hunt.

Just three minutes late... Jaybo31 is spot on.

Look at the Rem Model 7 youth , available in several calibers mentioned above

As your child grows, swap the youth stock for a std size stock

My 5 year old son just started shooting a rem 700 sps youth .243 with the new hornady 87 gr. reduced recoil loads. It kicks about like a 22-250 and has plenty of knock down power.

Be very careful doing this. If you are not experienced at handloading it is just as dangerous to undercharge a load as it is to overcharge them.

Iam leaning to the 243 and trying the redused recoil loads Hornady makes. One question does the bull barrel make a bunch of differance in the recoil?
