in the etx deer i see 2 different type deer. a long bodied wide antlered buck and a short squat bodied deer that is tall and narrow, we shoot and see more tall and narrow deer than wide on 14,000 acres of intense managed land. I think everybody should get on mld so they can do what they want and tell the state to stick it on managing for private landowners that have their own goals.
No I would not turn in a friend for shooting a buck under 13". The people that I call friends are people that I can call any time of day (or night). And I know that if I need something from them, they are there for me. They also know that I am there for them. A 12 inch buck is not going to ruin that. I hate AR anyway, I do abide by the law, but I hated having to tell my daughter that she could not shoot that buck because he looked like he was "JUST" 12 Inches wide.
When I was a kid, we all knew the local GW, we even spoke to him in the off season. He treated every situation different, based on circumstances. Used commen sense. Sadly there aren't many of those types around anymore. Now they seem to want to see what laws you may have broken. Doesn't matter what they stopped you to talk about, lets see what they can find.
I would turn in a stranger for leaving a deer that was under 13". If he took it, I would not. I also don't buy the post earlier about "shooting for food" being BS. If I did find myself in that situation, I would shoot whatever game I had to to feed my family before I took a handout from a social program. If I have bullets I don't need food stamps!

For me personally it comes down to the "letter of the law" and the "spirit of the law". The spirit behind certain laws are the basis for the letter of certain laws that come into existence. This is where common sense and good judgement come into play. Unfortunately both are in short supply these days and unfortunately sometimes even in our law enforcement. Use good judgement and common sense when applying the letter of the law to the spirit of the law and you will in most cases come up with the best conclusion to the problem. That application of logic is basically what a judge does in a trial. Take the evidence given with the intent behind an action to come up with a verdict. Or something similar to that.
Perception is reality:
I see East texas deer, in an environment surrounded by thicket/bush/trees... i see HIGH TIGHT racks as being the norm..
I see south/west texas deer, with a wide open environment with WIDE WIDE WIDE racks as being the norm.
doesn't take a scientific study or a whiskey drenched old timer to figure out the genetics for these deer are influenced by their environment.
There are exceptions to every rule, as I stated, but you can look at any pictures/trophys taken in these regions and see the distinct difference in the antler formation.
Let's compare apples to oranges. Do you turn yourself in when you look down at your speedometer and realize you're driving 66 in a 60? How about your wife or hunting buddy?
