    Lampasas Management Questions

I have a 300 acre ranch in Lampasas county. I have only been hunting for about 4 years and now I want to start managing the deer for quality. I planted 3 acres in food plots this year, and i feed protein year round. I have spotted 3 big 10-12 points on the property just this year. My fiance shot one, but it was well worth it as her first buck. Previously i had never seen anything more than an 8 point. The does vastly outnumber the bucks and my guess is 5:1? At night with a spotlight i can usually spot about 10-20 deer on my property. I will mostly likely let the "lampasas monsters" go this year because i want to let them breed. But what size deer should i consider a cull buck and how old? The only deer killed on the property this year has been the one buck (i posted the pictures a while back). How many cull bucks should I kill this year? and how many does?

One more thing, the guy next to me who's fence line touches mine has a deer operation going. He has about 10 acres high fenced, and usually has like 5 bucks in this pin. Does that affect the deer on my land at all?

I would plant at least 50 acreas in rye or oats if the terrian allows.
Culls... that is a slippery slope as to the definition. Basically, a "Cull" is what you DON'T want in your breeding "gene" pool. Funky antlers, cow horn spikes. OLD 6 pointers etc...

as for the does... sounds like you need to have a big harvest of them. Maybe the makings of a few youth hunts... You would have lots of participation... both in kids and "dad" volunteers.

One thing which is key in your quest... is getting your neighbors to buy into "letting them grow" mentality.

      ya got any hogs ???

I would try to get with Mitch (Krivoman on TBH). He has had a lot of success managing in Lampasas.

No hogs, or at least i have never seen one on my land, or driving to it. And it is a breeding operation. and his bucks are huge. I was just wondering if all the smell of other bucks would affect ones on my land.
