just some friendly advice - double check anything that someone who works at academy tell you - it may save some time and heartache. A buddy of mine went to get his sons birthday present (new 270), and they told him that he needed a copy of his military orders proving he was stationed here in Texas. Also, a handful of people from my office have been given bad license info on what they needed to hunt / fish legally, and it cost them. Ultimately it is up to them to know, but when you go seeking help with supposed "professionals", you kind of expect them to know what they are talking about, or at least direct you to where you can find out if they don't know

Never take anything anyone tells you about laws as the gospel (not even TBHers). Do your own research and talk/ask professionals. And get it in writing if possible!!

WCB has a great point. It's your butt on the line so it is your responsibility to educate yourself on laws & regulations where you hunt.

Bass Pro here in San Antonio told me I needed my military orders to buy a rifle for my son also. Academy Sports did not ask for it when I was looking at rifles there although I said I was just looking. Maybe I am off here but is there not a green/red state diagram that depicts residents of other states can purchase firearms in Texas?
Think I might have to go back home on leave to Illinois and look at a new rifle for my son for Xmas.

I wouldn't consider anyone from Walmart or Academy to be "professionals" when it comes to game laws (or anything else for that matter...). Go straight to the source for valid information...TPWD or local game warden on any game laws. I would consider the game warden to be the professional on these matters.

The gun/hunting manager in "my" academy is an idiot. I was trying to buy 3" .410 shells last summer and all they had was 2 1/2' shells...three different brands. I asked him if I could order several cases of 3" shells and he said no. I asked him why he didn't stock 3" shells and he said "people don't like them because of the recoil" LOL...He then asked me why I wanted 3"...when I told him they worked better on doves than 2 1/2" he told me that I couldn't hunt doves with a .410...they were just good for snakes and stuff like that...LOL
There are literally thousands of dead doves and quail that don't know I can't shoot them with a .410 LOL
