    .17 or .204?

Lookin for a new plinker but I can't decide between the 2? Thoughts?

.17HMR is a good gun, ammo isn't to bad for the price about the same as .22 mag. If your looking for a cheaper priced ammo go with at .223. As far as a .204 I only they are fast moving little rounds. The guy at the gunshop had a body armor plate showing holes that it shot through.

22 is cheeper on Bullets for plinking, as for killing coons and such well ether one will work good. Its kinda up to you on what you like, i like the 22-250 for killing coons and such great for yotes also just my 2 cents.

No comparison between the .22mag and a 17 hmr. Ive had both. Traded the 22 for a 17 and never looked back. For the same price a 17 shoots faster, flatter and is pure devastation on critters. I bought and NEF in .17hmr when they first came out and topped it with a tasco 3x9x50. For around 200 bucks I got a rifle that shoots 3/4" groups at 100 yards and drops about 6" at 200. Ive found by using the top of the heavy cross hair on a duplex scope its on at 200 if the winds not to heavy. This is where the 204 will make it up. I dont have one but thats probably going to be my next TC barrel. I know a fella that swears by his 204 on pigs and says they wont get up from an ear shot no matter how big they are. Ive layed a couple pigs over with the 17 when they are close but 2 have got up and ran off. My last outing with the .17

are you referring to the 17 HMR (rimfire) or a 17 caliber "centerfire" ?

a 17 HMR isn't even in the same league or discussion as a .204 Ruger

if you mean the 17 Rem , 17 Fireball, or 17 Mk4 , then the centerfire 17 cal version is similar and worthy of considering

I have 5 custom 17's and 4 custom 20's (centerfire) . The small calibers are addictive b/c they have NO recoil and able to shoot varmints out to 400 yds. PM or call me if you want to discuss

this video is from a friend of mine as I've posted it before

            caliber: 17 Predator

are we talking .17 center fire or 17 hmr, because .204 is a center fire so the comparison is different.

                  get both

                  I have a .17 m2 and hmr. I'd have a .204 if I could convince myself I need one with all the .22cals I have

For plinking 17HMR is good to 200yds with no wind. It's ok on small critters. I don't like it for coyotes or larger. The 204 Ruger is a great varmint round and much more expensive on the ammo. 22mag is slightly cheaper on ammo than 17 and is almost as accurate....and hits harder than the 17HMR.

A Good friend that I hunt with has a .204 that I've shot very little. Very accurate, extremely low recoil, turns whatever it hits head/insides into gooo!

I have a Ruger bolt action 17hmr. It fun to shoot, But I'm not doing cart wheels over it. Very radical, groups extremely well just up and down issues at yardages I wouldnt have thought.

Shot a 130ish lb hog in a trap 3 days ago (.22 was in feed truck). Quartering away I hit about 3" behind ear...........DOWN GOES FRAZIER!!! I go to open the trap and I'll be @#%@ if he didn't stand up and walked around like nothing ever happened. Small blood blister...thats it. Second shot on top of head was "Down for the 10 count" but I know a .22 would have done the job 1 shot.

Still fun gun, but IMHO WAAAYYYYY over hyped, will probably sell mine....probably (no pm's)
