Dang cosmic, your wording made a light bulb go off. It has a pretty wood stock not really beat up. Action is tight and mauser from what I know is robust and desirable. The barrel is filthy grey looking down the bore. Want to clean it up to get a better idea. However, my buddy could have it rebarreled to "his" choice caliber, have a new barrel that he knows shoots straight and what caliber it is. Or is a new barrel and all that jazz expensive? I just figure if it was like a few hundred bucks he could be shooting a fresh barrel that he knows is not beat to heck. I am sure he could end up spending a couple hundred bucks finding out what caliber it is by have the cast deal done and shooting a couple boxes of ammo thru it ony to find out the barrel is shot out or warped, or........ and end up with a rifle that shoot all over the place and no money towards a new rifle or rebarreling of this one.

If it's a .257 Roberts, he's got a fine hunting rifle! When the smith figures out what caliber it is, he can probably tell you if there is anything wrong with the condition of the barrel.

My bet is you can bolt a scope on it and have a fine hunting rifle. Most people who speak of "shot out", or "warped" barrels are full of it anyway.

More than likely it is a .257 Roberts built off the Mauser action. I've got one that AD Forkey from San Antonio built years back (How far I don't know, there's not a lot of information on him I could find). Hopefully your barrel is in good condition, I know the one I have is a ptomaine little booger.

The only way to know for sure is to find a gunsmith who will make a casting of the chamber for measurement (plug the barrel, pour in Cerrosafe and let harden, knock it out and measure the resulting chamber casting).

            x 2 ... Cerrosafe !!!

this will give you an accurate mold of the chamber , confirming cartridge

clean the barrel real good as you can "feel" any pitting or irregularities using a cleaning rod and jag, brush, etc....

does the bolt face look super clean or possibly show primer burns around the firing pin hole ??

have an idea what the cost of cerrosafe? I was going to go straight to you Cajun Blake and ask you. Figured if you had the time you would chime in. and I was right. But no it looks good to me. It was REALLY dirty but I wiped it down with some rim oil a few times and it all came off. A tiny bit of rust. I you wanted to get real real picky I can see a super super super tiny indention on one spot around the firing pin hole. But I am talking smaller then a safty pin hole. Maybe as wide as an thin haired persons hair.??? Sorry best thing I think I could compare it to. I have not cleaned the bore yet. Did not want to do any damage with too large brush. I do have a bore snake for a 270. Thought about using that to run thru it.

do yourself a favor and spend $8 on a can of bore cleaning foam

                BREAK-FREE Bore Cleaning Foam

Non-toxic and odorless, Bore Cleaning Foam chemically removes copper and
brass compounds from the barrel in 15 minutes, and leaves a protective film
behind to impede the accumulation of residue. Bore Cleaning Foam is easier
to use than other ammonia-based products. In addition, this cleaner also
removes normal combustion waste from your gun's barrel, eliminating the
need for a second cleaner. Effective but Gentle - uses a chemical reaction
to remove copper and brass compounds with no mechanical friction.

i also recommend these cleaning products , make sure you have a .257 brush and patch jag

this is what the cerrosafe mold will look like

a 1/2 lb bar will cost around $10 on sale

x3 also on the Cerrosafe, but the bolt face diameter can also give you a clue -- at least it could rule in or out .257 Roberts vs .257 Weatherby.
