I know asking for an opinion about broadheads is akin to asking whats the best pickup or hunting dog. In other words, a guaranteed argument starter. With this in mind, here goes. I was recently given some G5 Montec 3 blade broadheads. I like the one piece design and they shoot excellent with my set up. Over the years I have used and still use different broadheads (2 blade, 3 blade, 4 blade and mechanical) depending on what and where I'm hunting. My 2 most important criteria are they must fly straight and be sharp. Extreme emphasis on SHARP. This is the rub. These Montecs just do not seem very sharp to me. I read who G5 recommends they be sharpened but even then they still seem fairly dull to me. I know these are a popular broadhead and would like to hear some of your experiences with them both pro and con.

Question about G5 broadheads

Mine shot great with my set up, I had them sharp but I still had less than satisfactory blood trails on 4 animals this year that were good if not great shots. I really had to dedicate some time to get them sharp.
I did hear a noticeable whistle with them also.
I've got some Slick Tricks on the way. Bye Bye Montecs

I tried the montecs this year. They seemed dull out of the box. I sharpened them and they got better but still didnt seem that sharp. I made a perfect hit on a buck at 18 yards and watched him run away with half the arrow hanging out his side. He was the biggest deer I have ever shot and we did not find him. I switched back to my G5 Tekan 2s and made the exact same shot on a doe the next day with a complete pass through and watched her fold up at 15 yards. Some people on here like the montecs better than the tekans, but Ill never trust the montecs again. I will say they both fly great and I didnt really notice much noise from either one.

I am new to bowhunting this year and shot two deer (doe and buck) at 20 yards using the G5 Strikers. Both shots were complete pass throughs with very large holes in the animals losing plenty of blood. I never sharpened them out of the box and have not had either animal try to react to my shot based on noise from bow or arrow noise. It hit them as they stood in the spot I picked out on my sight. I have not noticed any arrow noise shooting them at the deer or targets. I'll have to try and listen better next time to see if it might do it or not.Last edited by JTS; 11-07-2007, 07:24 AM.

I think Lip is still in Illinois so he wont be jumping in on this but I know he shot a 10 pt. at our lease about 2 weeks ago with a G5 Montec. I would say it was about 20 -25 yds. He hit the shoulder blade and he only got 4" or less of penetration. We obviously were unable to recover the deer. When we found the arrow, the tip on the broadhead was bent.
I was not impressed at all. As far as I am concerned, that arrow should have punched straight through that deer and stuck in the ground.

I have shot the 100 gr. G5 Montecs for a couple years now. I took a doe Saturday morning with them. It was a complete pass through, and she piled up within sight (40 yards), but the blood trail was pretty slim. I have shot 4 deer with this broadhead, and I have never had much of a blood trail. Two of the deer were recovered the next day because of the lack of a blood trail. The wound seems to close up every time. I will not be going to the woods with this broadhead again. They do fly true with no noise, but they don't quite live up to my standards. I use shoot through netting wtih my ground blinds, so I won't be able to use the Rage 2-blade. I will lakely go back to the good old trusty Muzzy brand.

A buddy of mine shot a doe Sunday morning with one. He said it looked to be a great shot and about 20 yards from the point of impact, there was a lot of good lung blood. After that spot, we had no blood anywhere and we ended up losing the deer. We did a hand and knee search around that spot for a long time and could not find another drop in any direction to know where she went from there. He shot another doe yesterday morning and she only went 50 yards but still, very, very little blood.
