    Sighting in new set up

I am trying to sight in a new rest and sight set up.

First, at what distance do you start your sight in at. I have already ruined 2 new arrows by missing the target at 20 yards?

I have my sights moved up as high as I want to move them and I am still shooting high. Which way do i need to move my rest. I am shooting a Rip Cord Red.

Also my Rip Cord will drop when "testing" without and arrow.
It will not drop when I actually shoot an arrow? So whats the deal there

If your not fimiliar with tuning your bow I would recommend taking your bow to a Pro Shop where they can help you paper tune your bow. Once paper tuned you can start sighting in, here is a quick tune that you can try if you dont want to go to a pro shop

Well the bow shop is pretty swamped right now. They ended up rushing the install of the rest and I have already taken it back once for them to fix that.

So I figured now was a good time to learn to do it myself.

Understood, if there are no other bow shops in your area to help you out I would try the quick tune in the video. Once you get your rest tuned then you can start sighting in your sight (close range). Definately dont try sighting in your bow with out your rest tuned, its like wiping befroe you poo...it dont make sense!

I just got a brand new assassin yesterday, sighted in out to 30 today. I started about 10 yards making my way back to 30 yards ( when I get up to CCR's 100yrd range I'll get her up to 60yrds). I didn't have to mess with my rest though. Jim at Alvarado pawn got me set up good. All I had to do was mess with the sight. I shoot an HHA single pin slider though so after I raised the sight all I had to do was figure out where it was hitting at whatever range. I was drivin tac's in 30 min. Good luck!

Fixin to have Jim @ Alvarado do the same for me. Have heard nothing but good things about him & conveniently located within 20 miles which is also a bonus. We'll see

Sounds like you need to go to a bow dealer...not a box store and get someone to help you out.

                    one66stang,

I'd like to echo the earlier suggestion that you get help with your setup. You can ask questions and learn from there, but trying this on your own will test the limits or your patience! If you just can't wait for help, then at least get a high quality book or video about setting up a compound bow.

If you are shooting high, moving your rest is probably not the answer. The starting position of the rest is pretty much determined by the burger hole in the riser and an arrow on the rest (in the up position) should be approximately square to the riser when nocked on the string. To tune the bow, requires very minor adjustments of the rest and/or nock point. Making gross adjustments of either the rest or nock point will only cause major headaches for arrow flight and bow efficiency.

Assuming that the pro shop installed your rest and the string nock any where near where they should be, and you are still shooting too high at 20 yards, then you need to adjust your sight.

The issue with your Rip Cord is probably one that needs to be addressed by the shop where you bought it.
