Have to agree with the .243. What my dad started us on and my daughter uses the same gun now.

I have a 10 year old son, and he has a youth model 7mm08, very nice and little recoil, you can also buy the remington managed recoil shells, doesn't change trajectory and reduces the kick by 50%, add a limbsaver butt pad and it is like shooting a 22

Both mine started with .243 at ages 6 & 7 because we had the guns. Had I bought guns they would have been 7mm-08

              Now ages 11 & 13 they are shooting 7mm-08 & .270.

I have a buddy who has been using a 270 for years, my first gun was a 30-30, still have it, but now it is hanging in a display case on the wall

I killed my first 6 or 7 deer with a .243win, before moving to a .308win... an old heavy marlin .30-30 would be a good one too...

any of these suggestions would be good, the key is to get one that fits as best you can, I always have a set of shooting sticks for my son when hunting from a ground blind just to make it as stable as possible
