Sorry I am just now sending this out, I have been swamped at work.
Well the time finally came and I thought it would never get here!! My girlfriend and I set a date for the second weekend in October to take the kids and head up to their family’s 600 acre ranch in Segovia Texas, the Rock Pile Ranch, for some R&R and fortunately for me some bow hunting. I got everything loaded up and had to take my trailer to bring a 4-wheeler back that has been needing some bad repairs. It’s good thing I have big truck to be able to carry all of those pink poka-dotted bags and clothes that we all brought for a month stay if needed;-)

The kids, my girlfriend and Hidie the wonder dog got settled in with their DVD players and we headed west.

Tori, Hidie, and William.

Ellen and Hidie.

Ellen and the kids didn’t realize that you could legally drive 80 MPH outside of Kerrville so the mission was on for who get a picture of the sign while still driving 80ish…I won!!!
There are several ways to get to the Rock Pile Ranch and the one that I enjoy the most would be the exit off of I-10 on to Old Segovia Road. The scenery is un-explainable and there is wildlife that is usually in an abundance.

This is NOT the Rock Pile Ranch, but the next door neighbor.

This is the Llano river that runs beside the Rock Pile Ranch.

Entry into the Ranch.

After arriving at the ranch and getting settled into the cabins and ranch house we sat around and talked and got to visit with two of Ellen’s brothers and some friends that they had up there. This also happen to be Williams birthday weekend and Ellen and I decided that he was old enough to have a Daisy Red Rider BB gun. He was so excited to get it out of the truck and start shooting at everything he could.
The evening time came around and I decided to hunt a pop-up blind that was set up in oat patch field. There were two other bow hunters and one decided to go into one of the three hills to hunt and the other decided to hunt in the field next to me.
I seen a large bodied Axis that had pencil horns that I now know I should have shot, but that’s ok that is why they call it hunting. The hunter in the hills seen some does but opted to wait on something that was behind them that kept their interested up, but never showed. The other hunter that was in the field beside me was shooting a left handed recurve bow and made a great shot on a doe!!

Well to my surprise I had this little boy (William) come up to me when I got done hunting with this biggest smile on his face and I asked “so what are you so happy about?”
He said that he shot a rabbit with his BB Gun!!! The look on his face was priceless!!! Birthday weekend, brand new BB Gun, and his first kill….Priceless!!!

William helped his uncle clean it while I was helping clean the deer.

Then we cooked it…and it tasted like chicken…William even ate a little!!

After a long hot morning and not seeing anything that was of size for shooting we decided to head down to the river and indulge in some adult beverages and relax. The water was a little cold, but once you got in and had several beverages everything was good.

Some of us decided that it was a little to cold and opted to hang out on the shore.

Isn’t she just beautiful!!!

Ellen wanted a picture with two of her three “BIG” brothers. Rob in the middle and Dan on the end, Steve had football things going on in Houston and couldn’t make it that weekend.

These are just some of the animals that have been taken over the 100year history of the ranch. These are in the ranch house.

Along with the ranch house and the main house there are three cabins and a couple of trailers that are all used up during the holidays for the large family that gathers.

I didn’t wind up shooting anything, but the weekend was a blast and I can’t wait to go back. Ellen and I are scheduled to head there the day after Thanksgiving, but unfortunately the kids will be with their dads and they won’t make it.
Friends, family, and the beautiful hill country are what memories are made of…..
