    The Handshake

    ok...

I have been given and told allot of advice from my grandpa and my dad. I listened to most, and remembered some... Today was one of those times I remembered.

When you shake a mans hand what do you expect? Me, I expect a rough firm hand riddled with calusses and scars. Like mine. My hands have been put through there paces. from mechanical work/electrician/directv installer/throwing hay bails/building houses and barns etc... I could go on and on.

WELL, my grandpa told me. If a man cant shake your hand "like a man" firmly and look you in the eye. You should not be real eager to trust him.

Well yesterday I had a "att" tech call me that said he needed to see in our server room and electrical room... Kind of thrown off by the call I asked what it was that he needed to see in our rooms for. I forget his excuse.

Well he shows up this morning (I was out of town working yesterday). I go up to meet him in the lobby, and I reach to shake his hand. hesitantly he reached back, and my hand was met with this soft/smooth limp hand. hummm... instantly what my grandpa said popped into my mind.

I then start investigating him a bit. He is wearing street clothes, and a badge. after reviewing his badge I see the smaller print on the top right that says EXPIRES april 2009!

Told him he doesnt need to be in my rooms, and told him he can contact building maintenence if he needs more assistance...

    Anyway. Just interesting experience.

that was the other thing. he wouldnt tell me specifically what he wanted. and since we have well over 100k worth of equipment in our server room someone who will not be fourth coming with information and has expired badge more than 2 years old probably isnt up to much good.

I usually just do a fist bump and either blow it up or do the jellyfish

Interesting. I always look for direct eye contact, if they cant look me in the eye when shaking my hand then somethings usually not on the up and up.

Maybe I put more stock into it than I should but that first handshake makes a lasting impression on me. Always gives me a good feeling when a youngster looks me in the eye and gives a firm handshake. I remember a pastor I once had that when you shook his hand it was like grabbing a rubber glove full of cottage cheese – never did care for that guy…

I totally agree with your grandpa. I hate to shake a mans hand that feels like a limp dish rag, unless I'm visiting a sick person.

Hand shake is going by the wayside just like any other positive attribute in our society.

I actually stop and TEACH young(er) men how to actually shake hands. Limpy, soft handshakes literally drive me insane!

I agree that a firm handshake is a must but don't always expect it to be rough and covered in callouses. Mine used to be pretty rough but now I've been working in an office for going on 6 years and when I do get to do manly work I'm usually wearing work gloves. There's really no excuse for a limp, weak handshake though unless you have some type of muscular disorder.
