    Hit my first deer.

Shot him but never found it.
Last week I was invited with a buddy to go hunt at his place. We got set up in the afternoon up on his platform stand 20 foot up. He told me that he wantted me to shoot a 3 pt that was hanging around his feeder. Sure as **** a few min. after the feeder went off the deer came out behing us. He walked aaround 40 yards behind us. He picked at the ground for alittle while and walked out of the area. About 15min after that another 3 pt appeared right below us. He walked right to the feeder and began eating. My buddy taped me and pointed to the right. We could see a huge bodied deer heading our way. When he came into a shooting lane we could see that he was an old deer with a very lacking rack. He spit to make a perfect 4 pt but had a few nubs that would count to bring him to a 6 or 7 point. The small 3 walked up to him and begtan to try and fight him. The large deer ignored him for awhile. The 3 was content with just hitting the other buck in the neck with his rack. It was funny watching this little buck try to provoke the much larger one. After a few min the 3 quit and started eating again. I drew my bow, anchor, breath, release!! oh,crap, followed by a few other words. I aimed for the lungs. I didnt even think about how high we were up in the tree. I saw my arrow. Above the vitals and below the spine. I was ******. Found 18'' of my arrow. The arrow and Rage were clean execpt for alittle meat. No blood. I saw where I hit him. High. 2nd deer to draw back on,1st to shoot at and first deer I have lost ever. I wasnt feeling very good about it. I hope the deer stays heathy and I hope that maybe I will be able to get a 2nd chance at him. But next time, I will remember to aim low.

Aim for the lower heart - aim for the lower heart - aim for the lower heart.

Say it until you're blue in the face. Get back out there and shoot another one - AIM LOW.

          Good luck!

This bowhuntin' ain't easy. If it was everybody would be doing it. You will learn something with every animal you shoot. Learn and apply it to the next. Hang in there and you will get your 1st. It gets easier after that!

And you didn't even take the bow out of the case on Sunday..............

Sounds to me like someone needs to sign up for Adairs class........... learn to shoot, and get their confidence back!

I can relate to your frustration cantexduck. My first season in Texas, I shot over several deer before finally connecting. I was used to hunting from an elevated stand, but never had deer duck my arrow like they do down here. I don't know if it's all the cannabis they're grazing in Michigan or what, but the deer up there act like they're drugged compared to the deer down here. I even wrote an article for Traditional Bowhunter Magazine describing my frustration.

Keep after 'em and it'll click for ya. It will just be that much sweeter when it does!

Stay with it because it'll get better. As stated above aim low and think about something else when you're doing it. LOL

The hardest part switching from a rifle to a bow is changing the aiming spot. My rifle is sighted in for a maximum point blank range of 396 yards. I just hold in the middle of the lungs and it is a dead deer out to said distance. When I switched over to the bow, I had to constantly remind myself to AIM LOW! When you think you are low enough, drop it another couple of inches. Just don't give the deer away.

C'mown Chucki Duckie. Don't aim too low. You might wanna practice from 20 feet. Too low and you will have gallons of blood and no deer.
