I have the opportunity to go to New Mexico on a mule deer hunt. The gentleman that I will be going w/ has taken 2 deer at over 60yds in recent years shooting a 70# switchback. My question is does my 60# outback have enough energy to be effective at 60+ yds and if not how would i determine my maximum effective range? I shoot gold tip xt 5575's w/ 100 grain broadheads. Thanks.

What broadhead are you shooting? A cut on contact would be best for your set-up. You need to remember that a good sized mule deer buck will weigh in excess of 250 pounds and a big one will go well over 300 pounds. The more weight you can shoot, the more KE you will produce with those arrows.
The most important thing you need to do is to shoot your broadheads at 60 yards to make sure they fly true. A b'head can shoot differently from 20 to 60 yards.
Good luck!

If you can put 5/5 broadheads in an 8" paper plate with "cold" shots: take shot #1, put down the bow and walk around for a couple minutes, take shot #2, etc. that should be your max ethical shot distance. I'd say with a razor sharp broadhead you'd let the air out of it, good hunting.
BTW, I can't.Last edited by Bill; 11-05-2007, 12:59 PM.
