    Saddle Advice Please

Just got a couple horses and am needing a saddle. I'm 6', 0". 195 #. Thin to medium build. Small butt (so my wife says). We will be trail riding mostly. For now, I'm not wanting to spend big bucks to get setup. Just a basic saddle that will handle light use.

I found this saddle package online. Nothing fancy but looks like it would suit my needs. The cantle is pretty high. I would think this would be comfy on for trails.

I was in a saddle shop a few miles out of town last week and they had this saddle there. I sat in it and it seemed to fit good. But I'm no expert at saddle fit. The high back did feel different than the others that I sat in there that had a lower back. Couldn't really tell you which was more comfortable since it was just for a few seconds and not actually on a horse, ya know?

What do you horse/saddle experts think?

Careful with the cheaper off brand and mexico made saddles, they tend to pinch in the withers and over all just don't fit right

It is very important that the saddle fits the horse as well as you. Lots of problems will come from an ill fitting saddle.

Corriente makes a good working saddle that is comfortable, well-made, and affordable. You may want to look into a roping style saddle. They make a lot of trophy saddles for ropings and I used one for a long time that held up well. Takes a bit to get the stirrups turned, though.

404 Not Found - Corriente offers the best selection of trophy award saddles, custom barrel racing saddles, team roping saddles, youth kid saddles. Anything from custom ...

I got a 15" roping saddle from Horsemans and I love it. But now that I'm giving up and moving on I'll be willing to part with it if your interested. It's less than a year old and only used about a dozen times

I've been looking online for a corriente saddle but can't find an online tack store that has them listed for sale new. I see used ones in classified ads. And it doesn't seem the brands website has any pricing. What will a basic corriente roping saddle cost me?

You get what you pay for, comfort for you and the horse, a good pad is a must as well.
I would look for a good used saddle, try looking at some horse events, sit on several and get them to show you all the features, figure out what you need and then shop around.

We have cutting horses and saddles intended for cutting, but they are very comfortable for trail rides.
I got a Roo-hide recently on a deal that I like a lot, but my favorites are our Coates saddles made in San Angelo. They are expensive but if cared for will last a lifetime.

We have 7 or more saddles and have to use multiple pads under some of them. Don't scrimp on getting good, thick pads/saddleblankets.

                      Gibowhunter is right.

A good pad or blanket is critical, but don't think a bulky pad is going to fill in for poor saddle quality. Even if you are only trail riding, the amount of time in the saddle and varied terrain can leave you with a very sore horse if your tack doesn't fit him right. A good saddle will put even pressure over the contact areas, which helps compensate for someone with less than ideal horsemanship skills. I take our performance horses down the road and on trail rides to give them more exposure, but saddle fit is the number one priority. Keep in mind that neoprene doesn't absorb sweat or stretch. You might want this if you use the cinch on more than one horse, but if you use neoprene, the rule of thumb is to have real leather latigos.

My advice would be to find a good used roping saddle. It will probably fit your horse better than the one you posted, and it will be more comfortable for you. That high cantle may feel good in the store, but it can be constricting after a while. If you red for any length of time, you're going to want to stretch your muscles, especially if you don't ride often. The open seat on a roping saddle will allow this.

If you do come up here then you better call for a local GTG. Lotsa Weatherford TBH'ers around here.

Horsemans supply is where I get my hay from.
