The system will never rehab those who don't want it from the beginning. If it did, there would never be a repeat offender for even the slightest of crimes. So for the ones who choose not to rehab themselves, then they could at least pitch in and contribute to their own cost of living.

Why doesn't have a Sheriff Joe?

I'm a detention officer at the county jail, most of the guys there think they deserve to have it all their way. They complaint about their meals every day and if a toilet is fixed they want it fixed ASAP. The worst part of it all is that the way the system works now the turds can pretty much get away with what they want.

With that being said, work their arses off and make them serve full terms without parole!

Just make it a place where they never want to come back to and the word will spread.

Unfortunately our system is bass-ackwards, we treat the symptoms rather than the cause. We give drug offenders probation and imprison the thief. But how many of those thiefs and murderers were committing a crime as a means to get more "dope?"

I'd venture a large portion of them. The cause is drugs the effect is other crimes.

On a unrelated note does Bob Barker still own all the commissary in the jails and prisons in Texas still???

what are you doing in midland michigan?

I grew up a few hours north of there, but would always head down to midland to go shopping for shool stuff (once a year)...

Capt for tdcj and my staff, for the most part, are correctional officers, not prison guards. Been from the rough type to the largest to the geriatric facilities. None of them are easy streets. William justice ruinedthe self sufficient prison system. The job is truly a thankless one. Hats off to those who have worked that beat.

                      Absolutely agree with this statement.

I had a friend who was Warden at Clemens Unit before and after the "reform" took place.

Sounds like a great idea for a new reality show.

Think in most cases, we need more prison guards and less correctional officers...

I assaulted a man pretty badly and deserved to be removed from society. It was certainly punishment. For me it was also rehabilitation. I didn't want to go back and upon my parole, (and even before), I started living my life differently. I worked in there as much as I could to help pass the time. I was on a line squad and that was no fun. Beating the dirt with an "aggie" every day will wear a man out. I met people in there that I thought should never see the free world again. I also met a few other guys like me that had made some bad decisions and knew it. Rehabilitation is possible IF it is desired. I also knew guys that had plans for "coming up" upon release. "Coming up" is a plan to get a pocket full of money and/or dope. Those are the guys that become part of the revolving door syndrome. I wanted nothing to do with that. Upon my release I had a job in less than a week working for a Houston electrical contractor. I have stuck to the straight and narrow and live a completely different life today than I did back then.
I may be judged harshly for this post and my past. So be it. There is only one judge I'm worried about. Oh, by the way, I accepted Him while I was in Beto II.
Thank you for having the courage to post this. Couldn't agree with you more.

Theory is based on most prison systems/facilities today, through no fault of the people that work there, are being ran like summer camps.
                                Prisoners have rights.
                                Prisoners don't have to work.
Prisoners have access to TV, Cable, Basketball courts, handball courts, Weight rooms, baseball fields, doctors, dentists, psychologists, surgeries, etc etc etc...
Other than the fact they are locked up.. and they are in with other criminals where they might get harmed, where is the incentive to not come back exactly?
If a prison was ran like...i dunno.. a prison.. these guys wouldnt have crap and be forced to work to pay their debt to society..they dont work..they just increased their sentence.... their incentive to not come back would be built in.

                                Just a theory.
