Back in the day, I ran at night 4 times a week. I usually worked until after 10pm, so I would come home change and hit the road. It got to where when I ran in the light, even with cool temperatures, I felt like I had no energy! I was like a freakin' vampire. I carried a good (read big and sharp) knife and ran through a very quiet subdivision in Plano. The only incident I had was with an small unleashed German Shepard that left it's yard in front of the owner. I drew the knife and prepared for a close encounter, and yelled to the owner to call back the dog. The owner freaked and whined, "Is that pepper spray?", to which I responded, "No it's a knife, and I am about to gut your dog if you don't get it back on a leash!" She called the dog and as I ran by told her in no uncertain terms that her stupidity almost caused me injury and her dog it's life. Needless to say, I finished the rest of my run in record time, thanks to a major adrenalin dump.
with school started back, I'll be able to run in the mornings 2 of my 3 run days. So only on Sunday will I run in the evening when it cools down (unless I set an alarm early on Sundays). I'm running on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursdays and lifting on MWF. 1 year to get this fat arse in shape for Colorado 2012!
They have made a hat with "Led's" in the bill of the hat, seen it on t.v. but have not found it in any stores yet. And like others have said wear some reflecitve clothing and be safe.
just got back from a little over 4 miles in the dark. subdivisions very safe around here. running at night is a joy. and it's just too hot during the day, though it was still 90 when I finished tonight.
I quit running at night because it takes so long for it to cool down. The mornings are best for me. The headlight is your best bet for running in the dark whether it is in the morning or night time. You may also get one of the reflective mesh vest.
I run in the dark, but early in the morning.
And I live in the boonies, so there is absolutely no street lights, etc. In winter, when it is really dark (in a 'no moon' phase) I'll wear a head lamp to turn on when I see something or if a car approaches. But mostly, I rely on the light of stars, the moon, etc.
I have had deer spook and run across the road a few feet in front of me and I've been almost on top of a skunk before seeing him.
I hate running. I hate running in the dark. But I gotta do what I gotta do.
as the temps got higher i started running in the mornings. it takes to long in the evenings to "cool" down. i start between 6 and 6:30am and its usually in the mid 80's.
i live and the country and wouldnt feel safe running on the back roads wearing a flashing red light on my head. i drive over to a hike and bike trail a few miles fom the house and run it. have enjoyed my runs the past couple of weeks as the local cross country teams are practicing there and it has driven me to pick up my pace!
I started back running a few weeks ago. I only run at 6am. it is still dark and pretty cool.
No way I would run during the daylight hours at least until Nov.
Only problem I have is I keep coming across this skunk. I do not use a light and that freakin thing always seems to just come out of nowhere and man can I jump. He has no got me yet and I sure hope he don't
