    Running in the dark

How many of you runners, run at night? I'm trying to start back and it seems the only time I can go when it's not too hot is after 9:30. I live where there are no street lights so tonight I ran in the dark. I carry a flashlight but never turned it on. With school starting back tomorrow, I'll be getting up early to take my son to school. May start setting my alarm earlier just to run in the am instead of at night.

My only concern is stepping on a rock or a hole in the road and twisting an ankle.

Invest in a decent headlamp. It will take getting used to (both the light/shadow and something on your head). But once you are used to it, it really helps. Light goes where you look too.

Make sure to wear something reflective.

Definitely wear a white shirt with that reflective stripe. Don't want to miss the season altogether with an accident.

I would probably carry as well just in case.

I prefer to run at night even if I had the choice to any other time. It keeps my mind clear and focused. But where I choose to run is key for me. I hit nice subdivisions where I don't have to worry about busy streets and scary neighborhoods. Just make sure you run on the side of the road where you are heading towards on-coming traffic. Reflective clothing only helps when people are paying attention while driving.

I usually wear a light colored shirt (white or grey) but there are NO cars driving in my neighborhood after 9pm. I'm probably the only one still up around here.

Last night I almost hit a deer. Or should I say almost got ran over by a deer or 2. It was really dark and as I went by I spooked them and lot of the right side of the road started running way about that time 3-4 deer from the left side of the road decided to join them in the flight to my right. As they ran across the street in front of me I was about 5 feet from them. These deer have no survival instincts to run toward what spooks them!

I'm a early morning runner, tend to get up around 5am to go jogging for an hour. I will wear reflective shoes but the shirt and shorts have a stripe down the side that's semi reflective. As for light I'm lucky that the street is nicely lite.
