Do you swab after each shot so you're sighting in with a clean barrel? Why or why not? Thanks in advance.

Sighting in a muzzleloader

Sight it in like you hunt with it. When I was hunting with mine I would follow this protocol.
1. Start with a clean barrel.
2. Fire two (not one and not three) primers.
3. Lick a patch and run it down the barrel.
4. Turn over the patch and run it back down the barrel.
5. Load it up.
6. Shoot.
7. Repeat, yes all of it – clean barrel, fire two primers, lick, etc.
It was a lot of trouble but it works in my Austin & Halleck. The key here is to have your first shot hit where you sighted it in at. Too many guys sight in a rifle and then clean the barrel and expect the first shot on a deer to hit where the last shot on paper hit. This is magnified with a ML. With a ML you need to start out with a clean barrel (so you don’t screw up your gun with corrosion) so you have to sight in your gun with a clean barrel. I found my AH shot sub-MOA (almost ½ inch) after firing two (not one and not three) primers into a clean barrel and then load it up. Used to drive my wife (and no I never got arrested like she said I would) nuts when late on a Friday night I would step out on the patio and fire two primers. That gun would shot a second follow up shot very close to the first with only licking the patch trick. Each shot after that was a little more off POA. If I followed the above protocol it would cut holes out to 150 and almost to 200 yards.
I think the bottom line is to experiment with your gun to see what works best.
