    Thanks in advance?

Why do people do that? You are thanking for nothing and after whatever you are thanking for is done you are inclined to thank again anyways. Seems pointless to me.

Just like someone asking you if its ok if they ask you one quick question..."Do you mind if I ask you one quick question?"

    - ya you just did.

Your thanking them for their efforts before they do what you ask, hoping they will do it quickly!!! It's sort of motivational... In your case not so much. They should just tell you to have it to them asap and not thank you in the end!

I use the phrase when I'm asking someone to do something additional (above what I usually request). I use it with the people I work with and my customers. Being nice goes a long way. Some don't get as far as they would if they were a little nicer.

BTW - George Carlin died but had a funny skit on "have a nice day".

I often do that in written requests, just because I think it is a polite precurser to a letter or note termination. Had no idea some might think it improper. Anyway, thanks in advance for listening to my opinion on this.

If you are making a request, it would create an action on the other person's part that they should be thanked for.

It also puts a little pressure on the person to complete the request because by thanking them in advance makes the assumption that they will comply with the request.

Hey Im no grouch. I do it all the time.. ESPECIALLY with customers to create a preconceived notion that I am asking more than I should with the hope they will follow through.
I do it subconsciously though, just a weird thing.
