More than likely that is just an old bone that has collected a nice coat of dirt. It appears to have the porous qualities of an old cow bone that has been sitting out for a few years. Fossils tend to be deposited into other rocks and present only an outline of themselves. Of course I say these things based only on my experience in the outdoors and without any geological or paleontological qualifications.

i would call it heavy. it came in on a load of dirt. no telling where it came from or how deep it was.

Hero, sounds like you know more than me. it does look like rock to me. but hellifiknow what it is.

well i have been thinking. i found this on a job site. dirt had been brought in to level some areas. the naural ground was also dug up in this area for a ditch line. so it may have come in on the truck OR it may have been dug up. In this same area a LARGE ammount of petrified wood has been dug up. NOT pieces but WHOLE trees. i have seen tree trunks that go up and fork out and those forks have forks on them. i have see trees 2 foot + around and 10 long. Really cool thing is some are not completely fossilized. Just got me to thinking..............

Those fossilized trees could be worth some $$$

Where did you find it and can you scratch it with a nickle? Let me know and I can help you. I'm a geologist and I love fossils!

If the dirt came from the Alice area then I know that sand and gravel pit have a TON of fossils, everything from Mammoths to three toed horses!

well what im thinking is you have a rock rocks sometimes take on the shape of fossils that could fool lots of people i couldnt know 100% for sure unless i had it in my hand....i have a minor and geology and all im seeing is a rock but it depends on what type of compound that rock is and other factors to know.....

and a piece of petrified wood is not a fossil it is technically considered a pseudofossil just saying dont want to cause any conflicts just thought i would share what i know

well, i cant find a nickle anywhere in this house. kids get all the change. As far as rocks go im 99.9% sure its a bone. just not sure if its a fossil or just really old.
