    screw in step drill bit

For those of you that use screw in steps, do any of you have the drill bit? I bought one last night at Cabelas and just wondered if they work very good. I put a couple of my steps in the bit last night and tried to drill them into a scrap two by four, and when I start to drill, the steps move in the bit. I can't see how this is going to work very good!

I bought one also with the intention of using it pre season to install my steps and used it on one trip into the woods before putting it away. The step slips and even with an 18V. portable drill sometimes the drill didn't have enough power to complete screwing them in.
I chalk it up to 'one of the things I've tried to make it easier and it didn't work so let's find something else or go back to what we know what works' syndrome. Live and learn. I don't carry the drill anymore either.
Plain old fashioned climbing and hand installing the steps is still the best way for me.

I will pre-drill a pilot hole with a bit to make the step easier to screw in by hand. Works well on harder woods such as oaks

I was told to use a bar of soap and rub it on the threads, makes it easier and keeps the metal from heating up and breaking.

When I HAVE to go the tree step route, I drill a pilot hole like Aggiebow88 said. I then have a 4" long piece of PVC pipe that I slip over the step to help screw it in. The piece of PVC makes it quick and painless. Before I started using it, the steps would either wear skin off my hands or get tangled up in my gloves.

I just tap the end of them with a hammer a few times to get it started and then get em goin...never have that much trouble once they get going.
