Feed a custom mix 20% protein February through September, then switch to a 16% protein with more carbs in the feed for the winter. Spin corn feeders year round, 2 second feedings morning and evening each day.
We have had a very good fawn crop this year and good antler growth on the bucks, so this is working for us. Each place is different, but good nutrition year round is important to the overall health and growth of the deer.

I feed free choice gravity protein year round, well worth the results, when they need it they use it, when they have plenty they back off.

One of the most important times to feed protein for the health of the herd is Pre rut ( mid Nov)- Post Rut (late Jan). As bucks/does go into these cycles they burn alot of energy and receive many injuries. If they have the supplement feeding they will keep up their energy levels and also their health to repair any injuries. A deer will apply all resources it receives to the overall health of their bodies and anything else to horns and fawns. In the depth of winter the browse the deer eat is more or less gone to a great extent therefore the protein will supplement their overall health. We feed yr round to keep the herd at the best health it can be.

If it does'nt rain real soon you should think real hard about feeding protien this winter. Corn won't get the job done, deer are going to need some help thru the winter.

Very true. To many people think protien=big horns and don't see the whole picture.

Yes there is for nutrition; it'll thicken their endoskeleton. We protein feed 9 months of the year on our ranch.
