I've seen deer flip themselves through the air clipping the top of a 4 foot fence. Until I see different, I can't help but be a skeptic about a deer clearing a 10' fence. I would like to see it though.

I saw a young, healthy, athletic, 8 pointer sail over the top of my own highfence like it was nothing Saturday morning. He landed on the other side as if he hopped over a low-fence. It put me in shock. I dont believe the majority of deer are able to do this or either are never given a reason to make that kind of desperate jump.

I have heard that some deer get tangled up in the tops of high fence and die. Is this so and how common is it?

Deer can do amazing things when they are pressed hard enough. Saw one clear a creek in e. Tx. a few years back that was incredible!

SneakyPhil, I hunted on a place next to a high fence and the landowner said they have jumped deer a few times that tried to top the high and got caught up in it and they ended up having to take the deer to get it out (he had pictures). I am not a fan of the high fence for whitetails in my opinion the deer belong to the people and should not be in a pen. If someone wants exotic's that's fine build the pen to keep the whitetails out.

Some of the deer have trouble jumping my 4.5' fence at the ranch. I'm not saying they can't jump an 8' fence, but I don't believe it's a regular occurence. I sure would like to see it happen!

High fences have started eating away at hunting for people like me the working class that have to save all year to get enough to go on a good hunting trip. The deer no longer belong to the state or the people of the state once they are inclosed by 10 foot fence. There was a time that whitetail were free roaming game and fair chase for all hunters as long as you
had the land owners ok to hunt. Its come to a time that it dont take a hunter to get a deer it just take money and thats bad. Its like buying a new car or pickup you just pick out the one you want and pay the price
its that easy and some people still call it hunting whats up with that.
I guess for the rich it is hunting but for the real hunters it just a rich mans game.

They can jump pretty high when they want to.

Let's put this High Fence vs Deer thing into perspective.

Javier Sotomayor (from Cuba) cleared 8ft 1/2 inch in the high jump. Think about that for a moment. Humans regularly can clear 7ft (trained to do so). Whitetail are 3-4 times more powerful and literally all of them are trained to jump.

See I come from the school of thought that younger deer have a better chance of clearing a High fence then mature, fatty deer could...My brother, myself and my uncle saw a 2 1/2 year old buck on his ranch outside of Uvalde clear a newly finished fence last year because he was after a hot doe...They danced around with each other but there was one problem; an 8' fence separated the two and as we drove closer to him he took two steps back, didn't even get a running start and would have completed cleared the fence but his forward momentum stopped and his back legs clipped the fence and he did a front flip over the fence...He was a little dazed when he got up but we saw him that evening...Needless to say we were all VERY surprised because I didn't believe they could do it till last year...

My Buddy And His Dad Jumped Up 2 Big 8pts On Their Lease Last Year And They Got Up And Jumped The High Fence Bordering Thier Property. They Think The Big Bucks Came Over From There In The First Place.

I've seen it twice, one doe and one buck. Both were being pressured and hit the top and flipped over as described by others. More likely to go under than over. I saw a fence that had 2 feet of mesh wire laid ON THE GROUND to prevent the very same.

Saw one that tried it on 290 near LB JOhnson Ranch... poor thing was hangin from the top 2 strands by its back legs.

I agree that it seems to be the young bucks that try it the most.

I've seen the same thing, running parallel to the fence and then clearing it easily. Some can do it and others are just lazy, I guess.

On of the ranches I lease is high fenced on one side and there is a bare spot where the deer use a hill to jump the fence at that spot.

Two years ago, I saw a place where a deer had jumped the fence, got hung up and impaled on a Tpost - didn't find him/her, but lots of blood and hair on the fence. Blood everywhere - really nasty.
