    New addition to the family

Just picked her up today! 4 months old, full blood registered. Her names "Gypsy". Always wanted one so the found her! Wanna get her trained in home protection and possibly search and rescue. One of the dogs in her bloodline was a drug dog so she's got some working dog in her blood.. Who else has one? Any training tips?

Train her to find sheds. One of the best shed dogs I've ever seen was a GS

Start with the usual commands and make them rock solid. It might be 30 months before you can introduce any form of proterction training. Doggie has to be 1000% under control. Tina is 26 months old and I have had 2 trainers help us with getting her to the point where we can do the bite training. She is fixing to be pregnant and I have slacked off her training. Honestly she may never get to the point we will protection train her.
      Take your time.....

Without question one of the smartest breeds around - they are also fiercely loyal and protective. Just don't be surprised if she is standoffish to people not in your immediate family. They don't tend to get chummy with strangers - which is good. I have a buddy who has always had German Shepherds - they know me when I visit but they always kinda look at me sideways, like "dude I know you and we are cool, but you're not part of my pack - screw up and I will chomp your ***"

Thanks Thor.. Didn't know it took that long. And jerp, I think that be great if she was like that. We want her to be cool with people we bring over but if a stranger walks in without us like bringing them in I'd want her to tear em up. She's so calm right now.. Has been kinda nervous with our other dogs but no fights or gosling or anything. Gypsy just barked at em. She's been sleeping most of the day too..

can't do SAR if you do any form of bitework/protection

everyone has their own opinion, but i start protection at 10-12 weeks old

Oh really? I'm gonna guess by your name your a trainer? So will a German just be nauturally protective without protective training?

It could, I've seen plenty. The problem with a dog that is "naturally" protective usually ends up being more territorial or unsocial and the dog determines with who and when it decides to be protective. With training you will always have control and your dog should be properly socialized. What good is a protection dog if you can't take it anywhere or have to put it up when folks come over. Just decide which one you want to do more. I'll tell you now, SAR is all volunteer and they usually will make you run track for a minimum of 6 months. So for 6 months you are the "victim" and have to run out in the woods and get lost before you can even bring your dog to start SAR. Most clubs, you might find an exception. Just trying to offer advice, everyone does thing different but with protection dogs would you rather have a dog that you hope will protect your family when it hits the fan or know because you have trained him thru different scenarios and built his confidence.
I was asked to decoy a "protection dog" tournament one time and had every person that thought their dog would protect them come out. You wouldn't believe how many dogs ran for the car when the aggression was turned on to them. This lady would have bet you money her dog would bite you before the tournament.

I love my GSD and have trained her to trail with great success, my best advice is to give her a job and she will pick up on it quickly.

German Sheperds are great dogs. Very loyal and loving. You have a great New freind in deed.
