Using TOMTOM or similar as handheld GPS

I notice that my TomTom vehicle navigation has an option to navigate to a destination using latitude/longitude. Has anyone used this feature as a GPS for hiking, camping, fishing, hunting? Wondering if it works out in the sticks or if I am going to have to buy an actual GPS for my upcoming elk hunt.

They work but you will only get 1-2 hours of battery life and no way to change the batteries.

It's strictly for short term use only.
