    Taking the AR plunge

I have a choice between a DPMS and Bushmaster. What would you choose and why?

Are those your only 2 choices? Is it being given to you?

People will beat around the bush...

I guess I aint people.... DONT DO EITHER!!!!

Do a quick search on here and find out why!

You can build one cheaper than buying in store.

On that Note I will leave you alone because I know its not what you asked but I felt the need to save you from jumping off a plane with no chute.

I'm getting it through a dealer. If I were to piece it together what would suggest? I'm looking to spend $750 or so.

Don't think you'll get many good comments on either other than "for the price...."

Fair enough. What makes them so undesirable?

I might say to you check out cheaper than dirt prices and they have a lot of makes and models to choose from. Also some of the advice you will get in response to your question is to build your own, well you may not have the means nor desire to do that. I bought the Smith & Wesson M&P brand for $700 and am very happy with it. I can hit coke cans at 200 yards with it pretty regular with a variety of ammo so no complaints there. I can't say anything about the 2 you mentioned as I have never shot them.

Thanks for the info. I tried reading MC's AR thread but most of that is way over this newbie's head.

Watch the sales at Cabelas. My dad just bought a S & W AR 15 with a red dot scope for $649

I have a Bushmaster AR 15 (b4 remington bought bushmaster) and have had no problems with it.

Its all according to what you want to do with it. Shooting out to 200 yards you should be fine with either, shouldnt have any problems with it running. I have a DPMS that worked fine but I rebuilt it with a flat top upper. I have one that I built with a S&W lower and a stainless barrel and put a brake/comp on it instead of flash hider. It shoots flat and is pretty accurate. The possibilities with this platform are endless as far as the different parts and calibers, barrel lengths. Competition guns, varmint guns, self defense guns, plinkers, you name it and you can build something for it. Free float rails and tubes vs. the regular handgaurds. Different barrel materials and contours.Look at different configurations and you'll find what you want and go from there. The best one made is arguably a Larue. I say arguably because everyone will say theirs is the best. But your not getting a larue for 700$ even if it was drug behind a truck. AR15.COM has an abundance of information, look around there and you will find more info than you wanted.

I suggest you keep reading, keep learning.
Go to www.m4carbine.net and read the stickies.
Keep in mind you can buy a weapon from anywhere on the net
And have it sent to a local ffl for a small fee.
Neither dpms or bushmaster is known for their
                            Consistency in manufacturing practices.

I have a Bushmaster and have no complaints. Does everything it is supposed to. They are also carried by most Law Enforcement agencies and Military (I am told) by LEOs.
