Canny, you are correct. The last thing you want to do with mesquite is defoliate the plant. You'll get a top kill, and not kill the root causing a worse problem down the road. Also, you want to avoid treating mesquites (foliar application) during the dry season because they aren't actively taking in nutrients. Again, you'll just get a top kill. Get the TAMU Brush Busters Publication and read it. It's worth your five minutes. Good luck.

Everyone seems to be talking aobut REMEDY and diesel. True it will work and now during the drought the soil will be pulled away from the crown and it will run down the trunk if you basal spray.

You asked for the best, A chemical called RECLAIM. It is Mesquite specific and was designed and intended for use on mesquite. It is a water soluble herbicide that is meant to be foliar applied when leaves are no longer growing and in their mature state.

Many chemicals will work and are labeld for mesquite but the best is RECLAIM. expensive though.

I you are basal spraying there is no need for a surfactant (dish soap) and to be honest if you are using a high dollar chemical why skimp on the cheap surfactant, get the good stuff it will do a better job. Should you go with RECLAIM add the according rate of a surfactant to the mixture

My family has used remedy and diesel for years. We use 2% remedy for bushes and 15% for trees (spraying freshly cut stumps works best). This has worked really well for us and can really stretch out a gallon of remedy.

TAMU Brush BUSTERS is a great publication. Their rates of remedy to diesel are high but they are covering their butt.

Canny is correct on everything he has said.

Should you spray Basal treatment dont freak out when your trees drop their leaves and then put new ones back on.

It is the plants physiology telling it to drop its leaves and in a last ditch effort try to grow new ones. It will get about half growth and then slowly just die.

I have had better luck with reclaim on Mesquite and the remedy mix on huisache. JMO

I've been using the basal method for over a year. In fact I just sprayed remedy and diesel about 3 weeks ago with great results so far. The ratio you are talking about is for a foliar application....and you don't use diesel you use Remedy, Reclaim, Surfactant, and water.

For the basal (trunk) application, TAMU says to use 1 gallon of Remedy and 3 gallons of diesel (25% ratio). I've gotten away with a 15% ratio and it worked fine on the smaller bushes I was trying to kill.

Like others have said don't cut or mow them for about a year to get a good root kill or they might come back.

I have always found keystonepestsolutions.com to be useful for herbicides and prices

Somerville Feed Store has it for $71.50/ gallon
Producers Co-op in Bryan has it for about that amount too.

How many trees are you wanting to kill? The cheapest "method" if its not too many trees is to buy a bag of salt (water softener salt sold in 40-60 lb bags at any box store) and spread around the dripline of the tree. It will kill all vegetation there and you won't be able to replant anything until there area is flushed.
